“If you can hear the shots being fired, you’re good; because you never hear the shot that kills you.” ~SAS Security Officer, Joe Brazas. That was a little piece of advice during our logistical pre-port for South Korea. I just figured I’d open with that to make it a little interesting. :) Don't worry though, the closest thing we heard to a gunshot was a big bus backfiring. It was a little scary haha, and everyone ran to their windows. Anyway, we pulled into Korea on time, and it’s a pretty place. Sometimes, the ports look the same. Korea’s was similar to Hong Kong. A lot of tall buildings with big mountains in the background. It was nice though. While we were waiting for the ship to clear, a couple of Korean performers did a little ... read more

Jan and I took the 3 hour KTX (Speed Train) to Busan on Friday morning. We had set this weekend aside to do some adventuring. It all started at the Seoul Station where trains and busses set off to all over Korea. They run from Seoul to Sokcho, Mokpo, and Daegu, covering the country as though they are the veins that sustain its existence. Busan is located at the most Southern tip of Korea. The city itself is not quite that different from Seoul. It has a subways station and towering buildings; there are street venders and even a Busan tower. What Seoul doesn’t have though is a fish market and beaches. Right when we got to Busan we dropped our stuff in a locker and headed down to Jagalchi Fish Market. When we arrived here, ... read more

Sometimes the best nights are the ones that sneak up on you. The truth is, those are always the best nights. Small town Korea is a strange experience. Coming from a legitimate Canadian small town, I wouldn't say it is exactly the same thing. This small korean town is 500,000 people. However, if you find the right little hole in the wall, the right crowd, then you can still find that intimate good small town feel. But the intention wasn't really to party it up. If anything, I was just trying to go with it...stay awake. I have to retrain myself to party all night. Travelling isn't necessarily about partying, but it is about going with a good feeling in a good place, staying up if it means meeting more people, having good times. Last night ... read more

Ahem...Is...Is this thing on? Well, folks, it's been a little while. I've received several inquiries as to the status of my blog, and my life here in Korea, and I know some of you may have been ardently awaiting a new entry. What have I been doing with myself for the past month or so? "Not working on your blog, that's for sure," I hear some of you muttering. Yes, I can hear everything you say, even before you say it. Not much, is the short answer. That's really the reason behind the lack of bloggage - laziness, pure and simple. The long answer is that I've been busy, have had some personal issues to work on, and have made a few excursions, but nothing I have felt was warranting an entire blog entry. Plus, I ... read more

I should have prayed to my ancestors, and left them some candy or something. I had a four-day weekend, the last day of which is today, due to the Korean holiday of Chuseok, which is a harvest moon festival, on Sunday. It is most closely related to Thanksgiving in America, which means that traffic on an around the holiday is a nightmare, it's impossible to get a domestic flight or a train (I tried to go to Seoul, but I went to the KTX station and it was a Train in Vain. Ha, get it? The Clash have a song...oh, forget it. I am getting dumber.) Koreans get together and eat traditional foods: songpyeon, which are little squishy rice-cakes, and fruit were the most often mentioned foods when I asked my students about Chuseok. They prepare ... read more

Frankly, it's all a little disturbing... ...But kind of neat, too. I've never been in the path of a really major tropical storm. Oh, by the way, in case you didn't know, there's a decent-sized typhoon (which is a hurricane that spins in the opposite direction) headed toward Korea. Or maybe Japan, these things are hard to say for sure until a Hyundai smashes into your living room. The typhoon is named "Nabi", which means "butterfly" in Korean. How could I be joking about this? On one hand, it sounds kind of cute: "Hey, a typhoon named Butterfly couldn't be all bad, right?" (It also reminds me of the old chaos theory adage: "a butterfly flaps its wings in Tokyo and causes a thunderstorm in New York.") Actually, this typhoon is about half the size of ... read more

Sorry About That I'm lazy and it's late, but I wanted to get back on the blog to let everyone know I'm not dead. I'll edit this later, so that there will be pictures. But for now. Dancing Santa Today I met with one of my conversation partners. On the way to the coffee shop, we passed a store with dancing Santa Claus robot in the window. It did sort of a hip shimmy, and it was dressed in a black sweatsuit, instead of the traditional Xmas red and white. It was like Santa Claus doing Jolly Training for the winter. I imagine a table laden with thousands of cookies, and Santa with a scared rabbit look in his eyes, as part of the training, as well as some sort of obstacle course made of shingles. ... read more

Okay, fuck this. I just wrote a huge long spiel about my hike up Geumjeongsan, and it was very clever. Believe me. But I'm too tired to write anymore, and the internet ate my entry before I could save it. I'll try to put the photos in the right order, but I'm really frustrated now. Maybe the captions will be better. Enjoy the photos, at any rate.... read more

Your Blog Has Been Pre-empted For The Children I haven't posted on the blog in quite some time - there's a reason. I've been pretty damn busy. Happy to be busy, frankly, since for a while there, I was pretty bored. I had a couple of classes added to my schedule to accomodate the summer influx of students (since I don't work at a public school, and parents tend to use hagwons sometimes as day-care, my job gets busier in the summer). I've been studying Korean with a couple of native Koreans, in trade for help with their English. They both speak damn near perfect English, but want academic vocabulary and information on English grad schools, so I'm digging through the vast and cobwebbed corners in my mind for all those Latinate roots I thought would ... read more
