It was a friend and I who, on a wing, decided to visit the beautiful island of Palawan. Since everyone was either going to their own country/ province for the holiday, it seemed like the perfect time to venture our own motherland. Unfortunately since Palawan is home to the most beautiful beaches in the Philippines, flights were out of our student budget. In our desperation, we decided to take the cheap way, which was though the Super Ferry. For a little over 3000 pesos ($60) we arrived in Puerto Princesa (PP) after literally 30 hours. We departed the port in Manila at 4pm arrived in Corron, Palawan at 6am, then arrived in PP at 10pm. Prior to our departure we booked a place in El Nido. We read that walk- in reservations were pretty slim due to the holiday. We stayed in this quaint little backpacker’s place called Banwa Pension House. Because we were walk-in’s, the only room they had for us was the dorm room fitting 5 people. Fortunately there were 2 beds left. It wasn’t air conditioned, but there were fans. On every bed there were mosquito nets. To keep the story short, it’s a great place to stay

Port of Corron, Palawan
if you don’t mind a place that is rat infested (not mouse…rat).

Early at 6am the next morning, we had a van pick us up from the pension house. It was 800 pesos per person going to El Nido. We also read that they DO NOT have ATMs in El Nido. We thought we’d chance it and not withdraw money. The only money we had was the amount I was carrying. Let me tell you it wasn’t much. In a van that would normally fit 12 people, they managed to fit about 16. This is including the guy on the roof of the van. The thing about Palawan is that there are only so many busses and vans going to different parts of the island. If you miss one you might just have to get another ride the next day. There are 3 busses that go to El Nido a day. Keep in mind the last leaves around 10am. Make sure you get to the bus terminal at 8:30 to save a seat. Many people are desperate enough to ride on the roof of the vehicles.
