Palawan Our next venture was to swim with whale sharks off the coast of Puerto Princessa, Palawan. Out to sea the fisherman act as watchman to spot schools of fish feeding on plankton at the water's surface. This, along with seagulls circling overhead are the areas where you are most likely to find wild whale sharks, also feeding on the cryll and plankton. We left the Puerto Princessa port in search of these spots with the hope of catching a sighting of a wild whale shark. After a few failed attempts, the crew instructed us to quickly jump into the water with our snorkels. As I nervously looked down, approximately two metres below my feet I could see the distinctive spotted pattern of a 9ft whale shark gracefully gliding through the water. Unfortunately, this rare and ... read more

We take a minivan to El Nido, we were packed like sardines for 4 hours, there was just enough room to get your legs to squeeze in sideways. We arrived in Corong Corong, a couple of km away from El Nido, we are booked for 2 nights. It has its own beach and meant to be quieter than El Nido, and beautiful sunsets. We walk down to the beach through a guest house, the beach is dirty, people living in huts on beach, rubbish in sand, cannot walk along the beach without invading people’s privacy, dead jelly fish washed up –we don’t like it. We catch a tricycle to El Nido, 2 minutes over the hill. El Nido is a bigger village than Port Barton, but again a few back streets with guest houses and stalls, ... read more

In total we spent around 10 nights in El Nido. We did not need to stay that long but to be honest we opted for the cheapest flight back to Cebu which was over 2 weeks after arriving in Puerto Princessa. Initially we planned to visit Coron island but instead decided to spend more time in Port Barton (see previous blog) and El Nido with a few days at Puerto Princessa either side. So what did we do with all that time? Well, for starters - every morning we went to the Mid-Town Bakery. They sell the best donuts in Palawan, the size is decent and they are always fresh. Compared to the donuts in Greggs bakeries back home, here we were treated to warm donuts covered in sugar on the outside and a warm doughy ... read more

El Nido; a place in the Philippines that had us excited from the beginning of our research; a place that a lot of people arriving in Philippines excitedly discuss and a place described with a striking likeness to Guilin in China and also Halong Bay in Vietnam. Was this place really going to live up to expectations for us? Getting here from Port Barton was easy enough, we caught a Jeepney to Roxas and another to Corong Corong town arriving 4 hrs later. The drop off in Corong Corong town was only a short walk from El Nido proper, so geared up with our backpacks the 3 of us (Tom still included), walked straight past the tricycles and set out on our 20 minute walk. The sun was hot and together with the heat it had ... read more

First day at El Nido Kayaking and hiking ( or shall I say rock climbing) I woke up to the sounds of trikes honking horns, dogs barking and roosters cock-a-doodle -do! I took a quick shower and got dressed to schedule tours for the day and he next day. I walked in the Art Caffe and talked to the ladies there and booked a kayaking-snorkeling-island hopping boat combo tour for Sunday. A hiking tour for the afternoon and a kayak for the morning. I walked around the main area where all the bars, restos, hostels, guesthouses and shops are and I bought a few small souvenirs. Then I wandered around the outside streets and walked into El Nido town. El Nido is in central Palawan it is a bay called Bacuit ( not sure spelling) it ... read more
