(Day 549 on the road)Leaving El Nido was a lot more difficult than anticipated. Ongoing typhoon warnings caused all ferries and flights from El Nido to be cancelled for days on end. I had already booked a flight from the island of Coron, about eight hours north by boat, for the day after tomorrow, and when I found out that the overnight ferry I had been hoping to take was cancelled I was starting to get a bit nervous. Forced to spend another night in El Nido, I was up at seven o'clock the next morning, exploring all the possible options. But, as always really, things worked out just fine. My saviour came in the form of a local boatman who couldn't care less about any coast guard clearance to leave the harbour, and he was ... read more

... read more

It was the whole reason why I started. I was 28m deep. Hovering around a Japanese Cargo Ship, it was my first time. So enthusiastic I was to discover, soon my oxygen was near empty and as quick as I was there it was over. Wreck diving is the best diving experience of them all. Palawan is the far west island of the Philippines. A different island to the rest and out of the mass tourist base. Still clinging onto the ‘off the beaten track’ it’s main purpose is to Wreck dive and snorkel whilst relaxing on a jagged cliff face beaches. Coron is the area for Wreck Diving. Forbes Travel Magazine voted it in the top 10 Scuba sites in the world (I found out later.) That’s because in the early morning of September 24 ... read more

I thought I heard something but I wasn’t sure? It was about 5am and two fat arse girls come stumbling in after a big night out. In the dorm room they snuggle in the bottom bunk next to mine. I glance over to get some confirmation. It’s forthcoming with the sight of a forearm moving back and forth. This was one night in Manila and this was the beginning of my transport and accommodation sagas of the Philippines. I arrived in Clark - Manilla airport from Malaysia and Clark is the worst positioned international airport possibly in the world. It is so out of position that it took me 3 and a half hours to get into the city - The flight took me 2 and half hours. My first view of Manila was cow paddocks ... read more

Widely considered as the Philippines’ final frontier, Palawan could very much be the microcosm of the whole country. It packs so much in such a narrow strip of land everything the Philippines has to offer but has relatively less tourists, thereby making it easier to have an off-the-beaten-track feeling. On the northernmost tip of Palawan is the Calamian Archipelago, where Busuanga Island - its largest island - is located. Famed for its superb wreck diving sites, Busuanga also boasts of picturesque sceneries, good swimming, and worthwhile hiking trips for a fun-filled weekend. We had our two-day Coron-Calauit trip on November 1-2 this year, departing Manila in the afternoon of October 31 via Super Ferry. (Super Ferry departs Manila every Friday on the way to Puerto Princesa and stops at Coron Saturday morning before leaving for the ... read more

Simon & Lauren's Travel Plans begin with Lauren Flying to Auckland Via LA and Nadi (Fiji). After diving the Alderman Islands with the awesome Taranui, they then travel to Sydney, Australia. Simon will dive in frigid cold water looking for wrecks in the deep dark off the sub-tropical coast while Lauren Flies to Townsville to dive the awesome Great Barrier Reef with warm water, Minke Whales, amazing coral life, great onboard facilities and no wetsuit. No prizes for guessing which trip most people would choose... Lauren reunites with Simon after that in Sydney and they fly to Manila in the Philippines before flying on to Koror in Palau!, where Simon will finally get to dive with Lauren in the coral paradise she loves so much. Flying back to Manila, they'll take the night ferry to the ... read more

And now, we're down to our last two places in Coron. We visited CYC beach first. I believe this stands for Coron Youth Club. It is the only public beach (and free!) in the vicinity. It was a good place to stay into. There were lots of people here, and like the skeleton wreck, we didn't really go to the beach. Instead, we snorkeled and snorkeled. After some time, we were to our last destination - Siete Pecados. They said it was one of the greatest snorkeling spots. And yes, the place was really great! Just the day before, our tour guide told us of the myth of the place. Siete Pecados is named such because it is believed that there were 7 kids left behind in the island. Wanting to escape from the island, they ... read more

As expected, my companions all woke up a little late. Everyone was tired from yesterday's activities. Everyone can still feel the pain from climbing the mountain. We all planned to make this day as a relaxing one, not like yesterday where we visited as much as we can. This day, we were to enjoy the view more, stay at the different places longer and just have fun. i woke early though, just in time for sunrise. Well not really. Our hotel was positioned at the other side, it was a great place to see the sunset, but not the sunrise. However, I saw a great view of the moon. I call it the moonset. It seemed like the sunset because it was full moon. Everyone woke up just about the time when I and one ... read more
