After spending Maundy Thursday at a resort in Olongapo, the family and several cousins headed to the small fishing village of Pundaquit in Zambales on Good Friday 2009. Typical of a Filipino Holy weekend, hordes of city dwellers have trooped the beach (which can be reached via pump boat), making it a little too crowded. But take a few steps away from the crowd and it's hiking in the woods that seem to have popped out of a fairy tale book. Or a few more pesos for another boat ride and you're off to relatively more secluded islands for swimming and hill-climbing. That is, if you can bear the summer heat.... read more

Discovering the Philippines: One island at a time... Potipot March 21, 2008 11:00 PM We were so excited to leave our condo and head off to our destination - Potipot Island. We hailed a cab and asked the driver to bring us to Victory Liner Bus Terminal - Caloocan. It was still early and we were not on a hurry knowing that the bus terminal is just 20mins away from our place. I managed to buy tickets 7days before our trip just to make sure we don't run out of seats since it was holy week. I know for a fact that everyone from Manila would go out of town every holy week to escape the busy life in the metro. Worth the Long Drive Left Manila at 10:30PM. Arrived Candelaria, Zambales at 4:30AM. 5 hours drive to the gateway of the virgin island of Potipot. It's well worth the long drive. Dawal Beach Resort is our jump off point to Potipot Island. The island's white sand, clear waters and overall serene atmoshere reminded me of what Boracay and Pagudpod used to be- unexploited. A few huts, though, are sponsored by a telecom company which gives a hint that this beautiful island will soon be commercialized. 10 Things I did on Labor Day 08: (1) Enjoyed the long drive from Manila to Candelaria, Zambales. (2) Slept for 4 hours at the resort. (3) Woke up to a loud sound of music. (4) Experienced Potipot Island. (5) Swam in the beach. (6) Lied down in the sand. (7) ... read more

I have been reading a bloggers account of living in the Philippines. It sounds just as though l am living in a war zone which is almost total nonsense. I have lived here for 8 years with my wife and daughter aged 8 years and the people are very friendly and peaceful...and can say 99% of people live happy lives in this beautiful country. Sure many live on a small income but it is a land where you can live cheaply and fruit and vegetables grow all year round. It is safe to visit the country and you will enjoy yourselves here. If you want to find trouble you can, stay out late in the night, some areas Manila are like most cities you are at risk. You can move freely in Manila, shopping and sightseeing ... read more
