Our introduction to the Philippines came as quite a surprise, it started off pretty much as we were imagining with funky jeepneys (converted US army jeeps) running around and typical houses we've seen in most of SE Asia, but as we'd landed in Clark which is about 3 hours North of Manila we were really surprised as we made our approach to this huge capital city. For a country that has parts... Read Full Entry

I'm surprised!
Sorry to hear about the not so good experiences BUT Welcome to the Philippines! Hope you enjoy the rest of your stay :) P.S. don't worry much about the armed security guards, they are a very common sight

Comment
Erick, thanks for your comment, we have responded to you by email too but we will not comment positively about a place when we do not feel it is worthy of positive comments. Having seen povery in many SE Asian countries we saw the most here we've seen in a year, we know that we have homeless in England but not in the huge numbers we saw on the streets here.. that's a fact, yes a sad one but that's the way it is and it's not bullshitting the Philippines by saying it. These are our opinions, if people don't like them that's fair enough but we are still entitled to say things how we see them.

Someone seriously got offended, lol, shame that i am the one who always agree most when people criticizing my country. No offend but this is opinion of mine. It is unlikely Philippine among the poorest in SEA. For me the big gap between the social structure shows a sign of improper development plan, which is happening to most of the developing countries now(almost all i would say, when ppl use the public wealth for their own good). The rich ppl getting richer and poor getting poorer. Yeah, sad but it is true, and gives others the impression that the country is poor. Safe trip and looking forward to you guys next entry!

oh uh
easy erick, LOLS. some people do write conservatively but some write what they actually feel/see and freely express their opinion about it; unfortunately, whether we deny it or not ... what is written here is true and most often than not, the truth does hurts ;) we always have options, take it positively and do something to make it better, or deny and push the truth back and deny forever what is obvious. I assume you travel? Theories in books are sometimes far different from what we experience in reality. Chill :)

Erik is stupid
don't mind that idiotic guy, I'm Filipino and I don't pretend to think that the Philippines is either well off or doesn't have a poverty problem. Erik is the idiot for denying it and actually compares the homeless issue here to the U.K. if that doesn't prove your an idiot I don't know what does. I think he is one of those people who only wants to hear praises for this country, and delude himself to thinking everbody adores it. 90 percent of Filipino's trust me knows the challeges the country faces, just some morons who bullshits themselves to thinking otherwise. I love your blogs honestly I thinking your giving your honest oppinions without bieng asses about it.

Guys sorry your experience in Manila wasn't the most pleasant one but I suggest El Nido in Palawan or Donsol to see the Whale Sharks. Also the securty guards are there for security purposes, eversiince the seperatist bombings in the 90's. Its really nothing to worry about. A good tip from me is too get away from the cities and explore smaller towns in the country if you ever go back, you can get to experience the real Philippines. Far away from people chasing after tourist dollars. I hope Filipinos have been friendly as a whole atleast? p.s. ignore the moron. people who cannot spell or form proper sentences shouldn't accuse anybody of having low IQ.

Read between the Lines
Dale, don't even assume that this guy Erick is Filipino he prolly lives somewhere else in SE Asia with a highly developed Tourism industry for which he has a stake i.e. hostel, bar etc. I feel his comments are precisely well written to give you guys a bad impression of our people, not to mention our country in general. The fact is, poverty exists in any country in the world although with varying degrees and seeing the reality for yourself is part of the adventure. The mere fact that it stared you straight in the face shows the lack of pretensions on our country's part in contrast with other countries in the region which are trying so hard to mask it by putting up walls on their shanty towns to hide the eyesore from tourists. I feel Erick's comments are precisely tailored to give a bad impression of our people and country in general by way of reverse psychology in order to divert and preserve future flows of tourists and hard currency to say the least, towards another competing country in the region.
