Pokhara airport
What more can I say? 4th October
We had a great flight to Pokhara in a very small plane. Mia wasn't too impressed by the size of it! The flight was only 30 mins but the views were absolutely breathtaking! We could see the Himalayan ridge for the entire trip!
Once we arrived at the airport we jumped in a taxi and went via the permit office to pick up our trekking permits. We still had awesome views which was a first for us in Pokhara. The other times we have been there it was during April/May and a lot cloudier so no views.
We were hoping we could get a room at Hotel Mountain Top where we have stayed in the past. The manager we called 'Moustache Man' (due to his moustache...!) He had always been friendly and looked after us extremely well. On our first trip back in '97 Gav realised he had left his favorite t-shirt in the room after we had returned to Kathmandu. He called the hotel and 'Moustache Man' said "No problem!" He organised to give it to a friend of his who was a bus driver leaving for Kathmandu the next day. His friend even hand
Kathmandu airport - on the plane
The plane we are on is the same size as the one in the window delivered it to where we were staying! That's what we call amazing service! So, anyway, that's why we wanted to go back... We arrived at Mountain Top and found that not only did they not have a suitable size room that night for us but that it was now run by someone else :-(
Gav and Mia went to check out a few other places and luckily found a small (tiny) triple room right across the road owned by our Moustache Man! We had a good chat to him and his family (he hadn't changed a bit!) and then dumped our bags, got our washing organised and then set out to arrange for a porter to join us on our journey and carry Mia's backpack for the trek.
Mia had been quite unsure as to whether she wanted a porter. Not that she had a choice as there was no way she would have been able to carry her backpack. It was Gav's big old one and weighed around 15kgs packed... We promised her we'd find a porter that she liked and bonded with ok. We ended up hiring a man named 'Dende'. He'd just happened to walk
into the trekking agency when we were discussing porters - was the first one we met and he seemed ok - very quiet though. We asked him a few questions about family etc to try and warm him up a bit and decided he would be fine. We arranged to meet him the next morning and organised for a jeep to take the four of us to Nayapul - a 1.5 hour drive to the starting point of our trek.
Mia and I spent the next couple of hours checking out Pokhara. It's set by Lake Phewa Tal and is so much more relaxed than Kathmandu. We walked along the lake, did a bit of shopping then went and woke Gav from his nap so we could go out together and buy any gear we still needed for the trek (walking poles, down jackets, beanies etc)
We re-packed our bags, dumping any gear we didn't want to take trekking and settled in for an early night - excited to get going the next morning!
