So you would think a flight to Kathmandu from Singapore was a walk in the park after our last trip. Not so. A bird strike on the plane infront of us delayed us taking off in Singapore whilst they checked the runway. Four hours into our five hour flight the Captain comes on and lets us know Kathmandu airport has been closed and we are going to land in Calcutta India. No problem we do that and stop somewhere near the terminal. Please remain seated whilst we contact ground crew. Nothing happens quickly in India so several hours later whilst we are still seated the Captain informs us they have nearly finished all the formalities required by the Indians, oh the old British Bureaucracy still rules. Okay we got word the airport was reopened, Monsoon Storms were the problem and we just needed some fuel and we would be on our way. Trouble is the Indians were not expecting us so even the Captain was becoming frustrated. The Road are well Flooded
We should have put our wet suits on for what seemed like ages, very tired, hungry and needing to pee. The fasten seat belt light had been on all the time preventing the normal pop up to the toilet. Eventually we and a number of other diverted flights got on the ground and organised Chaos was an understatement. Still no toilets inside and the wait to clear customs was about 2 hours. Stinky Nepalise toilets with no Toilet paper and no water coming to wash your hands never looked so good. Seriously we finally got in a taxi at 6.00pm when we were initially supposed to land at 12.00pm.
Found the accommodation, food, toilet then… bed.
Next morning headed out looking for breakfast to discover we needed to wear our wetsuits. What were we thinking, long story short, flooded roads made it nearly impassible hence we grabbed a taxi and went looking for another guest house on higher ground. Asked the taxi driver how long it had been raining and he calmly replied two months. That made sense really.
