It was sad to leave Kuala Lumpur cause we had a great time there but we had a new destination to go to. Got down to the station pretty early to catch our bus to Penang. After pushing our way through all the ticket sellers (absolute pain in the hole who are obviously working on commission for the bus companies) we got our tickets. Worryingly we were called to our bus by a small man with one arm. Luckily he was only some sort of supervisor and not the driver. Another long bus trip, probably the longest so far with over 5 hours. Driver had to stop mid way as there was a loud alarm going off in the bus. Nothing a sponge and a big bucket of water can't fix. When we got into Penang we were basically dropped off at a side road bus stop. Met 2 English lads who proposed sharing a taxi to Georgetown. The taxi guy was only charging 30 RM which is about €7.50 for a 15 min drive but the English lads tried to cut it down to 20 (cheap feckers). Even at that they were splitting the cab fare so it only cost
them 15 RM (not even €4). Of course the taxi driver wasnt going any lower than 30RM. Arrived at the hotel and we were delighted with the room, a lot more spacious than we are used to and very clean. Wandered out to grab a bite to eat and found a local cafe. Got a big dirty burger and unfortunately had a ketchup incident. You all know those glass Heinz ketchup bottles that you need to continuously bang and only get a pathetic amount of sauce out. Well I decided to give it a good shake before opening the cap not knowing that the cap was only placed on top and not screwed correctly. Before I knew, it was a ketchup massacre. Thankfully the owner didn't mind the addition of tomato sauce on their wall.
After nearly 2 weeks its time for Immodium. Without going into too much detail I've spent a lot of the time on the loo in Penang. Sure I knew it was to catch up with me eventually.
Next day we wandered around the historic sites including the Cornwallis fort. Headed off to the Batu Ferringi beach in the afternoon. As this was our first beach
we have seen from our trip so far we were excited to get there but it wasn't a great beach and seemed very quiet. One thing I did manage to complete that day was my farmers tan. As you will see from the pic it's coming along quite nicely.
Another day we headed off to the 'Snake Temple'. In the temple itself the snakes looked either dead or wrecked off their heads from the insense as they were not moving. So we dropped in next door to what you could call a mini snake zoo which also included monkeys, chickens and turtles. This place was class as we got up close and personal with the snakes as you will see from the pics. If I wasn't already running for the toilet this trip would have fixed that. I was almost crapping myself when the snake was slithering at my face. At the start Jane was reluctant to touch any of them as these big yolks feed on chickens and Jane felt she resembled one with her white skin but eventually she caved and gave them a rub. The big yellow one is called Goldie and weighs over 50kg, it's a
Burnise albino python (a friendly one so they advised). We also got to see a 100kg Anaconda. This thing is so big it swallowed a 50kg goat before. After the close encounters with the snakes we took a trip to the Toy Museum. That's really all I can say about it cause we never actually found the place as the bus driver dropped us off at the museums older location.
25th of November and we are calling it 'Jane's Day' today as its the bosses birthday. We decided to chill out for the day.
We managed to find our local bar during our time in Penang. It's called the 'Mona Lisa' BBQ cafe and its run by an old Chinese couple. Grub was good in here and drink was cheap.
So our time in Malaysia has come to a finish and the next stop is Thailand with Patong Beach as the first location.
