After almost 31 hours of traveling, I finally made it to my hotel. I am going to recap my adventures so far, then go to bed! I have an 11AM flight tomorrow morning, so I will need to be up around 8AM.
On Thursday morning my SuperShuttle was at my house at 2AM! In hindsight getting to the airport over three hours early for my flight was probably a little too cautious, but oh well. The flight from DC to JFK was uneventful, and then I had a three hour layover. It was a good amount of time because I to change terminals and go through security again.
The plane from JFK to Hong Kong was huge! I walked in and did not realize I was walking through first class and got excited when I saw luxurious seats that reclined and were almost like seat cubicles. I soon realized that this was first class and economy class was a little different. The seats were fine and the on-board entertainment was excellent. To pass the time (16 hours!!) I watched almost the whole second season of ‘Modern Family’ (a sitcom for those not in the know). Between that, sleeping and two
Hong Kong Airport
Popeyes in Hong Kong very good and filling on board meals, the 16 hours was long but not quite as bad and as long as I had feared. In hindsight 3 books was probably a little excessive to bring in my carry-on.
Interestingly, the flight from NY to HK was more of an arc route, with that little space between Alaska and Russia being about the halfway point.
The Hong Kong airport is huge. It is also pristine—including the bathrooms. (Also the bathroom had miniature toilets for little kids—low to the ground and everything—they were cute!) Everything was written in Chinese and English so it wasn’t too hard to navigate. The design of the airport was very simple and the smell reminded me of the Asian supermarkets I go to in MD. Basically even the air smelled different. I was definitely the minority as I would say that 90% of the people on my flight to HK and at the airport were Asian. Though a minority, I also was definitely not a novelty and soon concluded that my plan to wink and nod at every white person I saw was probably unnecessary (kidding!!). I wasn’t hungry but they had a good variety of
western and Chinese places to eat.
The flight from HK to Malaysia was ‘only’ 3.5 hours and I slept most of the way. I even slept through when they brought us dinner, but was able to get one anyways. The view was a little more interesting and I saw some of (I think) Vietnam out of the window. I also saw some little Islands that I am going to pretend was part of Survivor Island—that time they were in the South China Sea.
I arrived in Malaysia and checking out and getting my passport stamped was very quick. I was also able to covert some of my USD to Malaysian money. Figuring out how to get to my hotel was a bit confusing, but I ended up just taking a taxi (only about $12USD). The hotel was about 7 miles from the airport and people drive on the right side here. The hotel is nice and has a lot of tourists. There are some markets out front, but I am not hungry and have a breakfast voucher for tomorrow.
Anyhow, so far it has been pretty uneventful, but I guess that is a good as I am

View from room; Malaysian neighborhood not sure I would have wanted and adventurous flight. Tomorrow I am off to Langkawi (the Island where they filmed Anna and the King). Hopefully I’ll have some exciting stories and pictures to share!
