We decided to get the overnight sleeper train to Malaysia as we had both never slept on a train beofre overnight so thought it would be a cool experience! We were right, it was brilliant!!! We boarded the massive train at 2pm, it wasnt leaving for a little while longer but we wanted to get settled and we like to be early for transport incase it leaves without us lol! We got on, and took our seats, they were leather, very comfortable and quite spacious which we were surprised at. Once it got on its way we realised why it would be 22 hours, it was sssllloooowwww, although at some points it did actually get up and exceed 30mph!!! We spent the next 21 hours chatting, reading, listening to ipods, watching the amazing scenery going past and having a bloody good laugh! Its amazing how much fun you can actually have on a train! Once it got to evening the beds were then put down, this involved 2 seats being pushed together and another bit slotted in, it being made up with sheets etc and a curtain pulled over so it was very private, we got in and comfortable in
what we thought was our bed but oh no it wasnt. We were told later on we had to move as we had paid for cheaper seats which meant we slept on the top bunkers, we looked up and seen what we were sleeping in. It was basically a fold down bed only high up, on top of the bottom ones, it looked a little worse than it actually was, those little pull down beds can be bloody comfortable! We got up, somehow managed to pull ourselves up, and got in, they were not the biggest of beds but would do for the night. Me and Laura were accross from each other so meant we could peek out of our curtians and make faces at each other, oh how much hilarity that caused lol! Nways, we spent the night in them and were wakened by a guy shouting at us to get off train and to go through immigration, he was laughing at the state of us 2 jumping up with hair lovely and erm 'tousled' we got shock of our lives, we seen that the whole rest of the train had gotten off, how we slept through them all
getting off and him shouting i will never know!!! We went through immigration and got Thailand visa ended and Malaysia one started, back on train we went to continue our journey for another few hours. By the time we got on our beds had been packed away and we were again sitting on the comfy seats down below, we spoke to a lovely French woman who gave us tips on where to go in Malaysia as she travels there every so often as now lives in Koh Tao, the island we had been to before Bangkok! Once off the train we got our stuff and had to get a quick 20 minute ferry to Penang where we got a taxi with 2 other travellers to a town called Georgetown.
Once in Georgetown we had to look for a Guesthouse, our first was the most disgusting one i have ever seen and am liking to come across, it was to put it nicely utterly minging!!!! Apart from the actual dirtyness of it there was also old people just sitting about or lying on the floor in it, they looked as if they hadnt been washed in days or possibly even weeks
or months!!!! After i had to run from it incase i was sick we ended up finding a clean Gueshouse by the name of Love Lane Inn-aw! It was a nice little guesthouse were we ended up checking in to the dorms, it was a big room with 8 beds (4 bunk beds) but we ended up being the only occupants of it so it was great! We had a look around Georgetown and sadly decided we did not like it, it was very dirty and unpleasant, the first place on our trip so far that we had not liked! It may have just been the bit we stayed at but as i say we were not great fans. On the way here on the train however we had decided to only stay one night here as we wanted to go to Indonesia as it is not far from Malaysia, it was a quick decision which was not planned but one we got very excited about and thought why not! So we booked with the lady at our Guesthouse to go as she was cheapest and left the following morning to Indonesia!!!
