A good article on the "The Travel" lists several places I have visited. And I would agree that they can be visited cheaply, or at least less expensive than typical Paris, London, Rome, Rio, Tokyo, Sydney, Munich visits. Morocco Interesting place to visit, but not sure how safe it is these days. Food and lodging are quite reasonable, but the pressure to buy from street vendors and store merchants is hardly worth a day on the Medina. Perhaps once you head out to the country or to Marrakech, the retail blitz would lighten to a reasonable level. Hint: forget the snake charmers and camel rides! The Travel says: Morocco is just a rock’s throw from Europe and cheap to travel. Morocco can be quite averagely priced if going on organized tours, but expenses drop significantly when traveling independently. It is best visited in February. For great value lodging with a bit of luxury, travelers consider staying in some of the iconic traditional hotels featuring garden courtyards offering a pleasing relief from the busy city streets. Warning: Women must cover up!!!! Argentina Perhaps the economy will be more stable if they adopt the US dollar as their standard. Otherwise, hotels are reasonable, and the food is outstanding. People are so friendly in Buenos Aires and Mendoza. The wines are plentiful, inexpensive, and outstanding. I regret not learning to tango! I also love the wide boulevards, and classic architecture. The Travel says: Much of its charm is enjoying European-like development since Buenos Aires was once considered ‘the Paris of the south, but paying prices below what people would expect. Travelers love visiting the North, which has the Andean and Quechua regions, as well as the impressive waterfalls of Iguazu. For more cultural experiences, people enjoy cities like Córdoba and Buenos Aires. Not to forget the Patagonia mountain region in the south, famous for its snowy peaks, glaciers, penguins, and whales.
Turkey Istanbul has become one of my favorite stops, with great food, shopping at the Grand Bazaar, and a plethora of attractions like the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia, the Bosphorus, and the unique culture. I love the Turkish lights, Turkish Delight, and the lamb and fish dishes. The Travel says: Turkey is one of the top deals on the planet at the moment for anyone trading Dollars or Euros for lira. Istanbul is the perfect destination, being such an astonishing and modern city but having prices people expect from an isolated or much less developed place. Situated between East and West and once home to the Ottoman and Byzantine Empires, travelers find Roman ruins, buzzing bazaars, cave cities, and plenty of Mediterranean beaches. Be watchful of the touts and scams.
Thailand Numerous trips over the years, with friendly people, outstanding food, great public transportation, reasonably priced tailoring, One of my favorite places is a simple lunch counter in a grocery store off of Sukhumvit Road. My friend Danny knows the city so well, so I just rely on him for everything I want to do! The Travel says: Thailand is a perfect destination to visit, with tourism fully back. The islands and beaches are more expensive than traveling around the local provinces, though it can be a pleasingly cheap place to travel either way, and people can find great value on any budget. For the best prices, people head to Chiang Mai and enjoy the region's experiences. Among the beautiful rice fields, Buddhist temples, and mount tribes, they find some of the best-value lodgings anywhere, whether looking for a backpacker dorm bed or a quality hotel with a swimming pool.
Laos A very intriguing country with an interesting past, curious customs, great food, and friendly people. Recall the CIA bombed the heck out of them during the Vietnam War but called it training and target practice!!! We had the most interesting cup of coffee here, with a tube sock used as a coffee filter! The Travel says: This mountainous country is almost completely covered in forest, making it a paradise for outdoor activities like zip-lining, climbing, tubing, and hiking. Many of the activities in Laos are also surprisingly cheap, and the recent increases in tourism mean that more budget hotels and hostels are popping up all over the country. Stay a night in a tree house at the Gibbon Experience in Huay Xai, tube down the river in Vang Vieng, or visit the incredible temples at Luang Prabang or Vientiane. Opium poppies are the cash crop, grown along the side of mountain roads!
Vietnam The northern areas, like Hanoi are cooler, with a strong French influence in cuisine and architecture. The country is full of interesting artifacts and cultural intrigue. The food here might be the best in Asia (other than Penang). The Travel says: Eating local will only set you back a few dollars per meal, and a cup of strong, aromatic coffee is less than a dollar. If you don't mind slow, long-distance travel, buses and trains around Vietnam are among the most affordable in the world, making it easy to explore all of this beautiful country. The country is also home to many affordable hotels (well under $100). Cycling is big here as well!
Romania A visit a few years ago during Dirty Pat's Fulbright year was interesting, great fun, and full of a checkered (Soviet) history. We went to Dracula's Castle up in Bran, visited Ceausescu's home, and enjoyed many fine meals with excellent local wines. The Travel says: The perfect place for a European trip that is off the beaten path and surprisingly affordable. With its charming little medieval villages and rolling Carpathian Mountains, Romania is rich in history and full of outdoor adventure. A money-saving tip: make use of the free walking tours (we did this) around many of the country's best historical sites. It is possible to stay at many unique (affordable) hotels in this iconic country. From Television: Nestled in the heart of the Carpathian Mountains, Brasov is a haven for nature enthusiasts and history buffs alike. The Black Church, an imposing Gothic structure, watches over the city and its charming squares. Adventure beckons just beyond the city limits, with the legendary Dracula's Castle and the breathtaking landscapes of the Carpathians inviting exploration. Love Exploring: Bustling beer halls, hip coffee shops, peaceful parks, graceful Art Nouveau villas, soup "Nazi" cafes, old orthodox churches and mammoth communist-era structures, there's a lot to see in this Eastern European city. Highlights in Bucharest include visiting the colossal Palace of Parliament (constructed by former dictator Nicolae Ceausescu), watching a performance in the gorgeous Romanian Athenaeum and relaxing in the pretty Cişmigiu Gardens.
Poland While not one of my favorite places, Poland has an interesting culture with friendly people, and hearty food. I have enjoyed my visits here. The Travel says: Poland is a country steeped in history and culture but is often overlooked for other European destinations. From delicious hearty foods to beautiful historical sites, Poland has so much to offer visitors. The main square in Krakow is charming and is surrounded by cafés, museums, pubs, music bars, souvenir shops, hotels, and restaurants to relax in. Smaller towns like Gdansk, Wroclaw, and Zakopane are all equally beautiful but are even quieter and cheaper to travel in. My last visit here was a volunteer gig at a Ukrainian/Polish refugee camp. Love Exploring: Heavily bombed during the Second World War, the painstakingly rebuilt medieval old town of Warsaw (now an UNESCO World Heritage site) is a remarkable feat and a wonderful place to explore. Another noteworthy landmark is the striking Monument to the Warsaw Uprising – the painful history behind it is well-documented at the excellent Warsaw Rising Museum. It also has elegant parks, most notably the Royal Łazienki Park with its Neoclassical palace. It is also the home to the Marie Curie Museum.
Mexico It seems like Mexico is always there, but not really. I have been the Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta and Mexico City. It seems to be a dangerous place now. The Travel says: Traveling within a region can be very affordable, although longer-distance travel can get pricey, mostly because of how big Mexico is. If you are backpacking and trying to save money, pick one region to explore well to save on travel costs. One of the best travel routes is from lively Mexico City to Oaxaca, ending with some relaxing beach time in the Yucatán Peninsula. For real budget travel, check out the jungles, waterfalls, and Mayan ruins in Chiapas state. The variety and quality of food in Mexico City is outstanding! Warning: the altitude of Mexico City got me with altitude sickness.
Columbia Always flies under the radar, but Medellin and Cartagena are both interesting. The Travel says: It's a land of variety, as one of the few South American countries to span both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts, and it is home to part of the Amazon rainforest and the start of the Andes mountain range. The vibrant cities of Medellín, Bogotá, and Cartagena have colorful streets and incredible street food to enjoy. It is recommended to book a stay at one of Colombia's stunning hotels. Parque Lleras in Medellin is great fun for food and music. The food was good, not great!
Greek Islands I have only been to Crete and Santorini, both fun but very different. Santorini has great wine, but mostly a couple's place. Crete offers more variety, better wine, excellent and affordable food and lodging. But mostly, Crete has the friendliest people I have ever encountered on my travels. The Travel says: With over a hundred inhabited islands to explore, there is one out there for every budget and traveler. Every island (not Santorini) is home to pristine beaches, charming seaside towns (Iraklio), delicious food, and iconic hotels. The whitewashed buildings stand out against the blue waters and skies. Except for Santorini, which is pricier, many of the Greek islands are surprisingly affordable, and there are convenient ferries for island hopping. My bit of advice is to try something different for a change!!!
