It's an interesting thing, backpacking. Just when you get settled in and start to like a new place your also ready to move on to the next one. It's almost like once you've figured out where to go, what to do and where to eat, it all becomes too easy, so you challenge yourself and move on once again..
I left Batu Ferringhi seven days ago after a great week and I remember thinking when I was on the ferry heading across that I hope Langkawi is going to be better. There would be nothing worse than leaving a great place only to find a bad one ( I guess thats the curse of a backpacker hey!). A first I was a little disappointed with Langkawi (nothings really ever like how it is in your head before you get there) but within 24hrs of being there I decided it was also a great place.
After arriving in Langkawi I headed towards Patai Cenang which is the backpacker part of the island in the south west corner (where all the hostels, bars and restaurants are etc). I booked into a great little hostel called Gecko's, it's not on the beach
like the last one but its a well known hostel which also has a great communal area/courtyard. It's the kinda place that people turn up to and don't seem to leave. There's an older guy here I was talking to the other day and I think he's been here about six months now.
In fact nearly everyone I have talked too here has changed their original plans and extended there stay in some way including me!
I've pretty much spent the whole week here hanging out with this really great little possie of five new friends. (Three Brit's, 1 Sweed and me). We've had a great week and its going to be sad to say good bye to them all when it comes time to leave in the next couple of days. There's also heaps of other cool people here too but the five of us have spent a fare bit of time together hanging out. It's amazing how close and good friends you can become in such a short period of time and in reality the only thing we have in common is the fact were all staying in the same hostel and backpacking.
The beaches in
Langkawi are also really beautiful and much better than those in Panang. I am told Thailand is even better so I am looking forward to that too in a week or so. Langkawi has the usual main street full of the regular tourist traps, local food, bars and the odd western restaurant every now and then. There’s also a really cool bar on the beach called Babylon too which is right out of a tourist brochure. In fact last night I spoiled myself a little and blew the daily budget somewhat. I went out on a 'date' with a really nice girl I met from Austria the other day. We went to a really cool 'Spanish tapas bar' that was actually on the beach... in Langkawi... who would have thought hey! Crazy!
Oh and the great thing about Langkawi is the beers. They are really cheap (about AUD$1-2) as the whole island is duty free and there available everywhere. Needless to say I've had a couple over the last few days. Anyway hope you enjoy the pics and I'll try and take some more over the next few days so you can see the other parts of the island.
