After getting the bus from Vientiane to Vang Vieng, we yet again arrived at another destination in the bloody rain. The rainy season really does live up to its name! We had done our travelling (holiday) homework on the internet and had found what looked like a lovely little place with new modern huts across the river well away from all the morons. After paying eighty pence to cross a dodgy wooden bridge, walking down a muddy road in our flip flops we found our destination. After being shown the huts by a young girl, I soon realised what a powerful tool Photoshop can be. The huts were dark, smelly, damp, and cold, with open outside bathrooms that had long drop toilets. Just to get to the hut I had to walk ankle deep in muddy ... read more

Geo: 18.9401, 102.357The road from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng is supposed to be one of the most spectacular drives in the country. Unfortunately, due to the hellish weather and mist Wales would be proud of, we saw nothing but the tail lights of the car in front. This was a 8 hr drive, which in the grand scheme of our travels so far, should have been a walk in the park, however, 9 of us, plus packs. in a 13 seater mini van.... not the best!!!We arrived at the sister hotel to the one we stayed at in Luang Prabang, opposite the Irish Bar. This bar, The Rising Sun, was owned by a guy called Gary, and was famed as the only Irish Pub in the country! It may have been Irish, with Irish stew, ... read more

Picture Cancun during spring break and you can get a pretty good idea of what it is like "tubing" in Vang Vieng with a few minor differences and added quirks. Vang Vieng has only really become big in the last few years but before that was a little known stop mostly only visited by backpackers who loved the laid back town in a picturesque setting with a great river that featured local bars along the shores. Rent an inner tube and mozy on down the river stopping at the different bars along the way. Just describing it sounds like the perfect recipe for a future tourist Mecca. Sure enough, the word got out and now Vang Vieng is booming with tons of tourist in addition to backpackers who come for the great party scene, the special ... read more

It's been a magical few days here in Laos. Katie, Alyssa, Nate and I departed sleepy Vientiane for the backpackers playground that is Vang Vieng. The journey there alone was notable. The trip takes about 4 hours back bus and we decided that being stuck in a local bus with no air condition for four hours in 100 degree weather didn't sound like much fun. So instead we walked to the bus station and kind of waited around until someone approached us and asked if we were looking to get to Vang Vieng. We, of course, were. So for about $1 more per person we chartered an air-con bus to our destination. This was probably one of the more awkward things we have done this trip. After all we were unsure that we would even get ... read more

We Left for Vang Vieng on the 2nd and stayed till the 6th July. We had to wait ages for the mini bus at Luang Prabang and after a short break down (thankfully) we ended up arriving at 8.30pm. The scenery was again stunning with the clouds misting over the mountains followed by a spectacular sunset, so good we had to have a photography break at the request of one of the guys on the bus! The only problem was the state of the roads. The poor quality road material used to build the roads here mean that large pot holes occur frequently, in some places the roads just become like dirt tracks. Coupled with the insane overtaking and humendous drops on one side, it made Alton Towers seem like a walk in the park! Our ... read more

Last time I blogged I was in Gianshui, China waiting for the overnight bus to take me south to the small city of Jinghong, just a few hours north of the Laos border. The overnight bus took 12 hours which meant I arrived at 4.30am, so I watched a few videos on my computer outside a small shop until it got light and then walked into the centre of town where I found a good room for $8 a night. To me Jinghong has a thai feel to it, unlike any other place in China. The city is quite small, tree lined, people are smiling and relaxed, and it also has quite a few foreigner style cafes and restaurants, another thing I wasn't used to seeing in China. I took a couple of day trips to ... read more

And so, dear reader, do you wonder what we did? We sit at the bus terminal south of Vang Vieng awaiting our a/c mini bus to take us to Vientiane. A day early. Congratulating ourselves for not succumbing to the backpacker way of insisting you tube if you come to Vang Vieng or even Laos. Lauren's dad will be happy, it is the one thing in all our plans he did not want us to do! The reason? Well several things contributed to us not partaking in this "sport". Firstly when we arrived out of town and thrown amongst the reckless tuk tuk drivers we had no place to go, we had chatted to another British couple and decided to have a leisurely beer and pour over the lonely planet guide and trip adviser app. We ... read more

Met someone from Amersham yeasterday?! I was also in a wedding, sadly it didn't work out and they got divorced this morning :( So much to show and tell properly when I'm home already :) I'm currently watching re-runs of Friends and eating noodles :) x Went out at 12 today but I left Q-bar within an hour and took a boat and a tuk-tuk back to Central Backpakers. Too much sun and not enough water had got me beat and I gave in. On the way, one of the many Irish boys we’ve met here offered to join me so I wasn’t on my own when we realised we’d been on the same sleeper from Bangkok – which I really appreciated as the boys had asked if I could make it on my own. Which ... read more

Spent most of yesterday pretending I was from North Carolina and playing beer pong. My life is awesome :) Went out twice today with a nap in between to recover. They played the Beatles – twist and shout- we danced in the rain on the decking and it was amazing. We drank beer in hammocks and exchanged details of where we’re from and what we’re doing before walking home at closing. What's great out here as you meet people from all over the world. Miss everyone at home regardless, peace and much love from Katie x... read more
