or as some guy described it to me, Disneyland for alcoholics. We (the international team) arrived at Vang vieng after a very long bus journey and decided to have our customary beer before we found a place to stay the first bucket washed down some crappy western food, wed see this menu again a few times before we left, almost every bar/restaurant has exactly the same menu! s the first bucket was vodka and red bull, well lipovitine which is a Japanese pharmaceutical version about a million times as strong as the British version + the fact the measurements are 50/50 spirits and mixers. again we split a hotel room, this time for almost half the money we get a plush hotel room with views of the mekong and the mountains in the background! i think ... read more

Hey Guys, After surviving what was probably the most crazy mountain, limited visibilty, bus ride since South America we arrived in Vang Vieng also known as the hell hole or the Alcoholics Disneyland depending on what you like and who you ask. The place is pretty rural and although it is backdropped by huge beautiful Limestone mountains the rest of town is fairly shitty. We ended up getting a great bungalow at the "Otherside Bungalows" which is surprisingly enough on the otherside of the river! To get there you just cross a lovely little bamboo bridge, that also doubles as a road/highway for locals on scooters, God Bless the strength of Bamboo! We were pleasantly surprised that when we got checked into our bungalow Jon and Lucy were our neighbours. This was hilarious since they weren't ... read more

Vang Vieng.... Wot can i say. It was the most random thing i have ever experienced. We rolled up on the bus after a very rough and wacky ride through mountains and booked into the first hotel we saw. It was hot and we couldnt be bothered to lug our packs around in the mid-day sun. We found a restaurant that looked decent and sat down. We had heard previously that they loved friends here but we never quite realised what that meant til now. All the restaurants here play re runs of Friends. Now i shouldnt say all because some did play Family Guy. As we were waiting for our food a few girls walked past in nothing but bikinis or and sunglasses, no shoes, nothing. I didnt understand at the time but it all ... read more

Hello again and welcome to our trip through Laos. After an overnight bus from Chiang Mai we were eventually crossing the Friendship Bridge into Laos. To get across the bridge you board a mini bus and it takes you onto the Laos side of the border. Craig sat next to a monk dressed in their usual orange outfits and we crossed into Laos. Our fist stop was Vientiane which was a twenty minute ride away. We got dropped off in the center of town and looked for a hotel. The first two places were full so we thought we would be lucky with the third and we were they had rooms available for only 45,000 Kip. The stairs to the sercond floor were a death trap especially when yoou were carrying a 20kg pack and im ... read more

A small and beautiful town surrounded by mountains and rivers, Vangvieng is a place of delight and wonder for visitors from around the world. The city is about 150 km north of Vientiane, situated between the capital city and the World Heritage town of Luang Prabang. The main attractions are the clean and clear water of the Nam Xong river, karst outcroppings, caves and mountain scenery. The town has more than 30 natural caves, and most places of interest are accessible to visitors all year round. Laos is steeped in Buddhist traditions, has a colourful culture and is famed for the year-round tropical weather that makes it a lush paradise. The people who live here hold many traditional festivals so that local customs live on. In the meantime the tourists from around the world who visit ... read more

Hi! Well we arrived in Vang Vieng the day before yesterday after the minibus/tumbledryer trip from Luang Prabang and managed to get the name of the guesthouse that friends were staying in and then moved in. Then we realised that the one they were in was on the other side of the road. Then we found a big rat in ours. So we moved over to the other one at about 11:30pm. The next day we found out that even that one was the wrong one! Anyway, we went tubing yesterday and had a great time. Also picked up a couple of injuries but nothing life threatening! I seem to have pulled something in my chest after a reasonably bad landing from a rope swing (maybe it's a punctured lung - woe is me!) and Sarah ... read more

It is common to say that you really like it or hate it. After 3 days in Vang Vieng i can sum and say that it is a really nice and relaxing place if you are coming in the right mood. If not - you have nothing to do here. The most famous Vang Vieng time spending is tubing. It can last 2-3 hours (if you are just tubing) or to become a whole day journey (if you stop at every bar on the river bank to drink some cold beer and jump every swing / from every tower into the river). I met some tourists that already spent a week tubing every day for the whole day.... On my first day here i went to a one-day trekking tour into the mountains. Must admit that ... read more

Vang Vienne is considered a stop over on the way to Luang Provang. Personally, I think it is a destination - especially for the budget minded traveler. Nowhere can you rent motorcycles, stay in a decent hotel, eat great food, get a massage and go on an all day tour all for less than $50 US / day. There is the popular inner tube scene which entails floating down a river in an inter tube and going bar hopping at the same time. Personally I missed that because I was too busy exploring other areas via motorcycles and kayaks. ... read more

We've jumped the border! Vang Vieng, Laos-I just wanted to let everyone know that we've made it to Laos after a few more days in Northern Vietnam. We don't have time to go into too many details, but here's a very abbreviated rundown of our pitstops from the last update. After Sapa, we took a 2 day, overnight boat trip to Halong Bay on the coast of Vietnam. After returning to Hanoi, we took thrilling 33 hour bus ride to Vientiene (the capital of Laos), then on to Vang Vieng where we have hanged our hats up to now. That's the very short of it, and we'll include the juicy details when we find the time, I promise. It has been interesting. Let's just say hand-sized spiders, armed border guards, and sore rear-ends for now. Pictures ... read more
