Saturday. March 22nd, 2008 I had organised our tickets for mini bus to Chiang Kong (on the border of Laos) several days ago. Cost was THB 450 (about $15 each) for the 5 hour trip. Got picked up from the Guesthouse at 12 noon then picked up the rest of the group (7 others in total) and headed off. Arrived in Chiang Kong about 6pm and got dropped off at some random guesthouse. Organised our rooms (THB 350 AUD $13 for 2 rooms) and went for a walk while it was still light. Checked out the border crossing so we knew where to come in the morning and how long it would take us to get there (less than 10 minutes walk, even with our backpacks on!). Ordered breakfast for tomorrow (so they’d have the ingredients ... read more

A boat trip down the Mekong River. There's two days we won't be forgetting for a while; the sort of experience where you know you'll look back and laugh, one day. Though our butts haven't forgiven us yet, the photos, the destination and the friends we made one the way made it all worth it. We took a bus from Chiang Mai to the Thai border town of Chiang Kong. From there we awoke early for a great sunrise, and crossed the border into Laos via canoe before passing customs and catching the aptly named 'Slow Boat' down river, destined for Luang Prabang. A sneak peak at the row of Slow Boats before boarding revealed reasonable luxury, with aeroplane style luxury via what appeared to be salvaged mini-van seats, a dining table and satellite TV. This ... read more

Started the slow boat trip down the Mekong towards Luang Prabang, the trip takes 2 days in total with a stop off in Pak Beng. The boat was like a viking boat and had around 80-100 people on board with 1 toilet and a basic bar. Neal and I were one of the last on so didn't manage to claim a seat, but this was a blessing in disguise instead we were near the front on the floor (the engine was the back and was very noisy). During the trip we got chatting the people around us and we formed a bit of a group. After 7 hours along the Mekong (that included several stop offs at various points along the Mekong to dump off supplies to villages) we arrived at Pak Beng. Now we'd heard ... read more

Our last 2 days in Laos were spent cruising down the Mekong on our own private long boat. It was just a great and relaxing way to finish this country. The scenery was beautiful, the food was fab (we had a chef onboard) and the overnight stop in Bak Beng was lots of fun! We boys from Venezuela even got us all dancing Merengue! We arrived at the Laos border town just before the border shut so we crossed into Thailand and decided to drive late into the night (rather than stay at the border) and have a day in Chiang Mai before returning to Bangkok. I won't write a separate entry for Chiang Mai as we only had a day there. We got up early (the boys had only had 2 hours sleep, I ... read more

Two days of floating down the Mekong River. That's what travelling in Laos is all about. No activity I can think of can introduce you so easily to the attitude and way of life that abounds in Laos. Everything is chilled, laid back, pretty much everyone just goes with the flow. So obviously this place suits me to an utter T. Most of the trip was spend engaging in some of the better activities in existence: napping, reading (20,000 leagues under the sea, which I bought as it seemed an utterly appropriate book for travelling), listening to music, drinking tea, eating homecooked food and occassionally playing cards. The views as you drift along the Mekong are not to be ignored either. Every now and then I'd find myself staring out at the misty moutains on the ... read more

Well, it took some getting here, but we made it! Several days after setting off from Kota Bharu, we are finally in Luang Prabang in Laos. As I previously metioned, we couldn't take the overland route into Thailand so we decided to fly (much easier than it sounds!) This involved getting to the bus station in Kota Bharu via a lift from our hostel owners, then an 8hr bus journey to KL (we set off at 9pm and arrived at 5am the next day). Being in KL now, we thought great, this is easy from here, but not so the airport is 70km outside the city! We then had a walk to the nearest train station where we had to wait for the first train of the morning to take us to yet another station to ... read more

So yeh, after our Muang Sing adventures, we attempted (note the choice of word) to get on our way to meet Shell in Luang Prabang. WE had made a plan to meet up on the saturday, judt as aback up in case normal forms of communication failed us. Which they did. unfortunately transport failed us as well, and instead of getting to the Mekong in pak beng where we would get the boat to Luang prabang, we ended up, after several increasingly painful journeys, in Muang Hong. which is pretty much nowhere. Stuck as we were we found a guesthouse with great difficultly as noone spoke any english, and decided to get up unfeasibly early to try and figure out our next journey. We got the smallest room in the world... with bathroom, but no running ... read more

Slow boating the Mekong River is another popular activity in Laos. I was doing it backwards, going upriver from Luang Prabang to Huay Xai in the Golden Triangle. There I would re-enter Thailand from the north. Our slow boat departed Luang Prabang in the morning and proceeded up river at a steady pace, relentlessly against the stream. The captain knew this section of the river and was constantly adjusting course, sometimes midstream and sometimes only 5 to 10 metres from the bank, weaving between rocks, past swirling eddies and running over ripples. Infrequently the engine would rev harder and the boat would roll slightly as we passed through a turbulent patch. The Mekong flows well in July and takes on a light brown colour like milky coffee. The boat pushed upstream through an endless valley of ... read more

Up at a reasonable time and had breakfast at the guest house. The checked out (although I did forget to hand in the BAP quest house room key and still have it now.) We got a Tuk Tuk down to the dock. The boat seemed fine but the wooden benchs didnt look all that comfortable and didnt afford much leg room. So I clung on to two seats for dear life and pretended to be a sleep so that know one would sit next to me. It took a while to get going and the boat filled up substantialy. While on the boat, it was then that I was to find out that the national plant for Laos is the cannabis plant. Every deck hand would smile then whisper "hey mister, you want some weed?" ... read more

* May. 11th, 2007 at 9:33 AM Chiang Klong - by Charlie OK, I thought, here I am, what next? Taking a look about me and looking back at the guesthouse we just passed, I figured it looked as good as any and as it was closer, maybe even better! Throwing my rucksack over my shoulder, I hiked back the few hundred yards and entered the well kept yard of the establishment. I went through the guesthouse and could find no one. I kept yelling ‘hello’ to anyone who could hear me but no one was answering so I went back to the street and the shop in front where eventually a man poked his head out from the back of a shop and we communicated that he was the guesthouse owner and I wanted ... read more
