It’s such a huge country, I thought I would eventually make ... Read Full Entry

What a contrast!
After reading of your high mountain, bike adventures, what a surprise to see this blog! The city looks gorgeous, and I loved your sophisticated little seatmate at the opera. Impressive that they know so much of us, but I'd never heard of this wonderful city.

Maybe I liked Almaty so much because I had been on my bike for so long...

I agree, Almaty is a great city in Central Asia. But I think Ashgabat is better. I hope you get to see it when you're in Turkmenistan.

Music for the road
Music is an important part of my travel experience. Great to see the Fab Four revered in Kazakhstan as well. If you need a lift on your ride...tune into World Music Forum...and be transported.

Beautiful Almaty
I too thought Almaty a beautiful city, and it would be one of the world's most beautiful if there was less of the dreary Soviet-era architecture (not the grand buildings but a number of the apartments and office buildings). I really enjoyed my time in the city whilst waiting for my Tajik visa. Hope to return one day.

sorry for the very late reply
I havent been online ain a long time... I stayed in a cheap hotel just next to the very nice hotel with the Eiffel Tower replica in the front. Don't remember the name of the street but I have no doubt you can find the Eiffel Tower on line...
