Tour Day 128, Cruise Day 26 – Shimizu, Japan – We had a notably topsy-turvy night getting to Shimizu, and, indeed, the captain announced we had aborted our first approach to the harbor because of the persistent high winds. Our second approach was successful, we arrived under brilliant blue skies and were greeted by a spectacular view of Mt. Fuji. My shore excursion didn’t begin until 1200 hours, so I circled the ship on the walking deck, watching the docking proceedings and taking several pictures I hope you enjoy. “Nihondaira Outlook & Kunozan Toshogu Shrine“ Shore Excursion Begin this spiritual day with a coach ride to Nihondaira Park Outlook -- a Prefecture Natural Park and the perfect spot to take in views of Suruga Bay and magnificent Mt Fuji (weather permitting). Board the scenic ropeway (cable ... read more

Tour Day 126, Cruise Day 24 – Fukuoka (Hakata), Japan – One of the first non-travel events to land on my planning spreadsheet was the Superbowl. A time-zone calculation meant the GAME should start shortly after breakfast. When I began to incorporate and examine the shore excursions, it was nice to see that there was nothing appealing in Fukuoka. Unfortunately, a couple of days before game day, I began to develop a cold and/or allergies had struck. Although the Superbowl was on the TV in my cabin and on the big screen in the Rock and Roll Lounge, I lazed away the morning dozing off periodically until my stomach won the battle. The score indicates that I missed a good game. Congrats to KC! Tour Day 127, Cruise Day 25 – Scenic Cruising Kanmon Strait –Japan ... read more

Tour Day 122, Cruise Day 24 – “Ground Zero & the Atomic Bomb Museum” Shore Excursion – Nagasaki, Japan – Nagasaki was opened to foreign trade in 1570, and flourished as the sole portal through which Western culture entered Japan during the isolation period. Along with Christian culture, foreign learning found its way into the country - particularly in the fields of shipbuilding, mining, printing and medicine. In addition to its many historic places, the city and its surrounding area are also very rich in scenic beauty. Today you will visit Nagasaki Peace Park, created in remembrance of the atomic bomb explosion on August 9, 1945. Conclude with a trip to the Atomic Bomb Museum and Hypocenter before returning to the pier. . Wear comfortable walking shoes. Bring local currency for any purchases. This tour ... read more

Tour Day 122, Cruise Day 20 – Day at Sea Tour Day 123, Cruise Day 21 – Shore Excursion: Chiran Samurai Houses & Peace Museum – Kagoshima, Japan Chiran, just nineteen miles south of Kagoshima, is sometimes called Little Kyoto because of the many Samurai residences preserved here. The houses and their beautiful gardens are approximately 250 years old. The gates to the residences, moss-covered stone walls, hedges and black tile roofs evoke the Edo period. The samurais’ descendants still use several of the residences. View them from the outside. Tour the Chiran Peace Museum, which explores the background of Japan’s kamikaze pilots. They trained nearby before embarking on suicide missions against Allied sea vessels. The museum includes photos and final letters of the young pilots, many of whom were teenagers, and it makes a plea ... read more

Kate Springer of CNN: Almost every year since she was a child, Hokkaido resident Naomi has looked forward to her family’s traditional Christmas meal: a KFC “party barrel” brimming with salad, cake and lots of fried chicken. “In Japan, it is customary to eat chicken at Christmas,” says the 30-something Japanese woman. (Not my idea of a tradition!) “Every year, I order the party barrel and enjoy it with my family. I like the delicious chicken and the cute picture plate that comes with it as a bonus.” Naomi, who asked only to be identified by her first name, and her family are far from the only Japanese residents who enjoy KFC for Christmas dinner. Every year since the mid-1980s, life-size Colonel Sanders statues – dressed as Santa during the holiday – have welcomed droves of ... read more

On a bright, sunny, warm morning the Silver Muse docked in the sprawling port of Yokohama. The first sight we saw was the Ramen Museum. Being great fans of that noodle dish, we felt right at home. Our disembarkation was a smooth process and before we knew it we were fiddling with the money exchange machine and searching out a taxi to take us to our rental house in the seaside town of Hayama. It is important to have a handful of Japanese Yen since credit cards aren't so widely accepted outside of the major cities. The ride down to Hayama was quite scenic and uneventful. I had printed out the address of our rental in both English and kanji (Japanese writing) to help the driver. However once we arrived in Hayama he had a very ... read more

I hate long layovers on my flights to Europe, Asia, or South America. But these are some of my favorites, from Simple Flying. From the world's largest indoor waterfall to the world's tallest slides inside an airport, Singapore Changi offers much more than just air travel. The airport currently has more than 80 restaurants, cafes, and bars, providing ample choices for food enthusiasts. The airport also includes a movie theater, along with a sound and light show, complemented by additional offerings such as a spa and canopy bridge where you can take a stroll and stretch your legs while enjoying a scenic view. This is probably the gold standard. Haneda Airport, conveniently located less than an hour away from popular Tokyo destinations like Asakusa, Shibuya, and Shinjuku, stands out as the city's most accessible airport. After a long hiatus from hosting due to the pandemic of the past several years, we are back on the high seas again and loving it. A lot of water has passed under the bridge in those intervening years. Zoom calls became a way of life for keeping in touch with friends and relatives. It was the longest stretch of time since we have been married that we have not traveled somewhere in the world. During the quarantine we got to know our new home in Florida and were grateful for the comforts it offered like a swimming pool, hot tub, ping pong table and a lovely lanai overlooking our lake and 160 acre nature preserve. But travel is definitely in our blood and by 2023 it was time for us to hit the road. In ... read more

The Hikari Tokaido Shinkansen is the bullet train that we’re getting on. We are headed for Osaka, with many stops along the way. I don't know how many stops there are going to be because quite frankly, I haven’t looked it up, nor do I intend to. Who cares really, we’re not in a hurry, we are in vacay mode. Before we checked out of our hotel room at noon we took the opportunity to go to the Pokemon Center retail shop and perhaps get a table at the Pokemon Cafe Tokyo for lunch. The place was just around the corner from our hotel, in the Nihonbashi district’s huge Takashimaya department store, in a tall building across the street from where the two original Takashimaya shopping centers with its magnificent early twentieth century architecture are located. ... read more
