Day 1:
The nigth before we left Tokyo bay at 10 PM heading towards O-shima for a short camping trip. After a short but good sleep we arrived at 6 AM in the morning at O-shima. The island is not that big so with in an hour we arrived with the bus at the free camping site at the southern end of o-shima. The camp site is located at an amazing spot on high cliffs overlooking the pacific. Although it was free camping, the site had a cooking area, two outdoor (cold) showers and a simple toilet. As soon we arrived we met a japanese fisherman who arrived with the same boat from Tokyo, he had stayed for many times at the camp site and thus explained us the 'rules'. After setting up the tent we went for a stroll through the little village to buy some extra food supplies. In the afternoon we went to a public onsen and at 4 PM we started cooking. After searching for some dry wood we could start to make the pasta on a wooden fire. It went quite well and half way the fisherman joined us with some extra food. I eated the
freshest sashimi ever without stomach problems and tastes some grilled fish and chicken besides the pasta. At 7 Pm it was totall dark and time to go to sleep. But after an hour is started to rain and not so long time later the tent started to leak...aargh. We had to move the tent to the covered kitchen area in the cold and heavy rain. Next time i think i buy a more expensive tent, instead of one for 4000 Yen at the donkey hote shop (a very cheap shop in shibuya).
Day 2:
Around 5:30 i woke up again, because due the heave wind and rain the tent was almost blowing away. After building some rope constructions i got a short extra sleep. During the day we went walking to Fudeshima. As said one of the top 100 best views in japan, and yes it was quite amazing. The beach is during the summer months often hit by tsunami waves of 10 meter, but this day it was very quite and peacefull. On the way back a few older people offered us tea and candys and finally almost a complete meal. We found out that it was a
fresh sashimi
the freshest sashimi (raw fish) i've ever taste, just one hour old. reunie of old classmates who used to live on O-shima. These people where so friendly and we had a lot of fun with them. After some time we left with our backs full with delicious handmade food. On the way back we went again to the onsen. Around darkness we started to cook, this time pasta with grilled vegetables and some sochu to drink it away. We where invited by the fisherman and his friend to join the evening with them. They both introduced themself as heavy drinkers, so after eaten the pasta and vegetables it was time for some more sochu, some beers and a lot of other kinds of grilled fish. After a while i think i went to my tent again to sleep, because the next morning i woke up with a big headache in my sleeping bag. But at least it didn't rain, so finally a dry nigth.
Day 3:
Today it was time to climb the vulcano who dominates the island. A big climb of 786 meter finished finally on the top of the vulcano. On some spots smoke was coming out of the ground and the whole are was full of former lava
cooking
every evening we where cooking on a wooden fire. We made grilled bananas, fresh fish, grilled vegetables, pasta and ramen streams. The black dramatic stones where covered by green plants and a lot of flowers, which gave the area a beautifull view. During the climb a couple from the campsite gave a short ride with their car. They where very friendly and later we met them again on the campsite. In the afternoon we went to another onsen, wich was quite nice with a lot of baths and waterfalls. In the evening we made again some pasta with some grilled vegetables and as dessert grilled bananas...mmmh oishi des. what a wonderfull day.
Day 4:
We woke up with a subtropical wheater, a good day to finish the O-shima trip. We pack our stuff, make some grilled bananas en ramen as breakfast, make some last pictures and say our camping friends good bye. The happy couple offers us a ride to the nearby beach we where planning to go. They drove us to the beach, exchanged businescard and said good bye. From the rocky beach we walked along the coast of the island and finally ended up in the harbour. On the way the rocky beache transformed in a black lava sand beach, which was quite beautiful. Because we still
had some time left we went to a sea view onsen. This onsen is situated on a high cliff with sea/ harbor view. At a cetain moment the ferry arrived while we where still in the onsen. So i took the opportunity to make a picture of me, the onsen and the ferry...😉. At 3 PM we departured O-shima and headed for Tokyo. On the way there was a beautifull sunset above tokyo bay. It was clear that we where heading to a big metropole, because the closer we got the more airplanes/ helicopters and containerships we spotted. All these traffic, the slow ferry and the amazing sunset where a superb ending of the O-shima trip. I think i just love Japan....
