Ok so I didn't actually spend the entire week in Tokyo. I was lucky enough to get to visit a little town called Nikko for a couple of days. Nikko is a little bit north of Tokyo, and it took us 3 hours to get there by train. But the long train ride was definitely worth it...Nikko is one of the most beautiful places I've ever visited. Remember how I said that all temples seem to be the same? Well that's not true for the temples in Nikko. These were some of the most beautiful structures I've ever seen. It was more amazing than I could have ever imagined. I guess that's why Nikko is a World Heritage Site, and one of the temples there is even considered a National Treasure! It was actually Ryan's idea ... read more

Ahojte! Este mi aj doniesol vodu ... read more

OK time for a pop quiz! Q - Japan is one of only 4 countries which boasts its own _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _? A - Disneyland! And that’s exactly where me and Danny headed the day after the fish market expedition! I remember going to Disneyland Paris back when I was a kid and I was no less excited this time around! Tokyo Disneyland is only 15mins outside central Tokyo and is connected up with a direct train! Going on a Sunday was a mistake though, the queues were HORRENDOUS. 2 hours for Space Mountain! Some people were evening queuing 15mins for popcorn from the street vendor! But despite all the hanging around it was a great day! Tokyo Disneyland is essentially the same as all the other Disneyland’s. But ... read more

We boarded a bus headed for Tokyo at 5:26 p.m. last Friday, ready for our first big adventure here in Japan. We were on the bus two hours, then transferred trains a couple of times before stopping in Ueno, Tokyo where we stayed the night in the cheapest hostel in Tokyo (so we were told). Greg and I shared a 10’x 6’ tatami room with a futon mat, blanket and two pillows. There were communal showers and bathrooms in the hall that you could tell were cleaned, but used often. It wasn’t the worst experience, but I didn’t feel the cleanest after sleeping there. In the morning we again transferred several trains before arriving at our final destination about 2.5 hours away from Tokyo: Nikko. Nikko is famous for its fall colors, waterfalls and temples, and ... read more

On Monday we caught the train into Nikko, Nikko has a history that stretches back to the 8th Centuary, also for many years it was a famous training centre for Buddhist monks. This area is crammed full of temples and shrines of which we saw most of them but after a while you reach a saturation point where they all just start blending into one another. We also made our way to see the famous waterfall in Nikko which was a nice sight, but again if you have ever been to Victoria Falls it makes this one look like a small water trickle. As you may have noticed Nikko was an interesting place to see but it has not been my favourite by any means…Tomorrow we are off to Kyoto which I am really looking forward ... read more

We took a day trip to Nikko National Park, north of Tokyo. It was about a 2 hour bus ride up there. It was raining with thunder when we got there. We went through the Rinnoji Temple and Toshogu Shrine complex, a collection of beautiful historic buildings on hilly terrain surrounded by huge cedar trees. We had a Japanese-style lunch in a local restaurant in Nikko, which I thought was really good, consisting of noodle soup, rice, vegetables, tempura, etc. We took the curvy road up to Lake Chuzenji, a natural lake formed by a volcanic crater. The weather cleared and it got breezy and cold. The elevation at the lake there was over 4,000 feet. We saw some monkeys. The lake is the source of Kegon waterfall, not far away, which we also checked out. ... read more

Ho everyone - the saga continues... ... Day 6 - starting the day early we ate the last slice of birthday cake (yes i know it seems like ages ago that we bought it - but is still tasted great, a little like seaweed still but great). Leaving the comfort of our international youth hostel, we headed for Tokyo Station where we were planning to exchange our exchange order for our 14 day rail pass. After some rough directions from the ticket man we found the right desk and bingo - we had our shiny new rail pass! this may not seem exciting to you but to us this meant freedom and a ticket out to the rest of Japan! Making our way onto the platform we had our first up close and personal experience ... read more

This doesn't get two entries since I feel it was more like a one day trip less bus time. I got to Makuhari on time, and actually caught up with Liz, Ian, Priscilla and Kirsten at an intersection so we finished the walk there as a group. I bought a snack at the conbini and got my seat. The bus was a little more crowded this time since we only took one due to about 30 people going. It was kind of unenjoyable but I took a seat on the aisle so I could stretch out a litle. Aside from stopping in a service area for lunch, which was kinoko udon (mushroom noodles) for me, we went straight to Toshogu, and Dr. Itani came along for that part to act as a tour guide. I don’t ... read more
