It's been one year since I left and it feels like yesterday - it's amazing how time goes by so quickly. In that year we've done quite a bit of traveling, made plenty of shiny new friends, and have enjoyed a host of unique cultural experiences. It's been quite an adventure to say the least, both good and bad, and I'm very thankful that Denise works so hard so that I can be a lazy mooch. However, life in Japan, in Masuda, has turned out to be vastly different than we expected. Japan can be rather taihen for a foreigner, and getting routine things done, such as going to the bank or the post office, can turn into confusing ordeals that drag on for days because they don't quite understand the concept of travelers cheques or ... read more

The contents of this entry contain incriminating photographs of me performing acts that would likely get me arrested, possibly even deported. But it was a sacrifice I was willing to make. The things I do for you guys. I woke up early today to accompany Denise to the sleepy mountain town of Hikimi, about 40km south of Masuda. Denise was busy teaching english classes at the Junior High school, so I took it upon myself to mosey over to the local onsen to have a nice, hot bath and shave. I also thought it would be a good idea to bring along my camera. Japan is blessed with an abundance of natural hot springs throughout the country, and as many of you know, they partake in nude communal bathing. It's something we've become quite accustomed to ... read more

I missed a white Christmas by only 3 days, but after having driven in the stuff in less than ideal conditions I now have a new respect for snow. My train to Okayama (and then on to Takamatsu on Shikoku) left from Shoyama station in the neighbouring prefecture of Tottori. I left home around 5:30am ( -5 degrees, still dark) on the 29th December, giving myself more than twice the amount of time I would normally need for the trip. Thankfully the snow ploughs had been working during the night so I was able to leave in the first place. Snow may be pretty, but it can completely change the appearance of roads - to the point where I thought I had got myself lost driving along a road I had driven along numerous times, both ... read more

I was hoping for a white Christmas, but apart from a decent fall a week ago there hasn't been much sign of snow so far - a change from the metre or so that was apparently on the ground this time last year. Snow or no snow, it's still Christmas. Best wishes to all for 2007!... read more

In our island, there is only one traffic light. It’s near the elementary school. The main purpose is to teach traffic rules to students. You may be wonder to here that, but if it is small island like ours, this is not a rare case. So this is a kind of pride for many islanders, to say that they have only one traffic light in their island. (I think many of us hate the traffic light system in Japan) Any way here in this article I have no intention to boast about it, but I wish to write something about the small children who are crossing the road near by this traffic light. Recently we heard shocking news about suicide incidents of children, who faced bullying by there fellow students. Adding to that, one school ... read more
