We arrived at Tokyo Narita at 6am and met Brenton and Anne at Tokyo Central station. We travelled to Hakone by train and apparently did a travel loop that may have included seeing Mt Fuji. I don't remember it and Brenton says I was asleep most of the day.... read more

Oli hienonhieno päivä! Hieno! Noutoaamupalanyssykkä kourassa kävi kuitenkin ohraisesti, kun saapuvassa junassa lukikin jotain ihan muuta (T... read more

It's plum blossom time! After one of my coworkers posted some really great pictures on Facebook from Umegaoka and told me they were in bloom, I decided to look up some places to go see them on my days off. I stumbled upon the Odawara plum blossom festival, and found that it had been extended through Wednesday - my day off! It seemed like fate, so I decided to head out on my own on Wednesday to see what the buzz was all about. My journey took me out on the Odakyu Odawara line, about an hour and fifteen minutes from my home location. It was fun going in the opposite direction from Tokyo and Yokohama, since normally when I travel I am going towards those cities. The route took me a lot closer to Mt. ... read more

While it hasn't been a busy time for much sight-seeing due to the temperatures, it HAS been a time when a lot of stuff that needed to get done got done - and most of this is stuff that I have done in Japanese myself. While Jocelyn was here, we hit the Ueno Zoo and got to see the cute animals there! We saw a Giant Panda for about .5 seconds amidst a wave of Japanese parents shoving through people with strollers. It was like being back in America again, it was amazing and nostalgic. The penguin exhibit was closed due to renovations, so I made a ton of sad faces and resigned myself to going back another day to see my favorite animals out playing. But there was some pretty cool stuff and it was ... read more

Jocelyn is visiting from the states right now, and while she is here, we're trying to do fun stuff and see lots of things I don't normally get around to. Even though it's winter, and it's not very picturesque, we decided to go to Kamakura on one of my "weekend" days to wander around and see the multitude of shrines and temples there. It didn't take too long to get there from my neck of the woods - about 60 minutes, give or take with trains and connections. It was cool, but not cold, and though we had our coats on, we were quite comfortable walking around. It wasn't busy, either, which I guess is a benefit of going during the off-season. We made it in good time, by 11 AM, and decided that our first ... read more

It's been a long time since I wrote a blog! Coming back to Japan was a pain since my flight got so screwed up. We were delayed due to mechanical reasons out of Chicago, and it ended up being such a long delay that by the time we got into Narita, it was after all public transportation out of the airport had stopped - and a cab to just Shibuya, which would only be halfway to my apartment, would have been over $250! Fortunately, they got a bus to take us to Shinjuku and I had a friend to stay with overnight, but it was really just not a great situation and I can't say I'm in any hurry to fly United again. But I was anxious to get back to my life here, so I ... read more

Oops!! I forgot to update again. x____x Sorry, everyone! It's been a hectic couple of weeks for me. I've been fighting off something for awhile and with my overtime and shift swaps, it's been hard finding the time to really rest and get back on my feet. However, the weather has been gorgeous, for the most part, aside from a few big storms we had - it's been raining so much here this autumn! I went to Disneyland with Wes and Chandra to see the Halloween decorations! I was pretty impressed that I got myself out there through 3 transfers, and I met them around 6 pm. My ticket was the discount ticket for after 6, which was perfect for my schedule, and even just having 4 hours was totally worth it! It was sooo awesome. ... read more

Took trains for a 1 hour 30 mins journey to the southern tip of Tokyo bay to visit the temple and shrines at Kamakura. Not too many tourist about so great photo opportunities. The giant Buddha was previously housed in a build which was destroyed in a tsunami during the early 20th century. The Buddha being bronze survived and was later moved further up the hill to it's present location. Took the slower train back via the coast. Very scenic.... read more
