I woke early in the house on the edge of Kamakura. Like most places we have stayed, we were sleeping on separate thin mattresses on Tatami mats. After showering we met our hostess in the kitchen who was cooking us our breakfast. It turns out that she is a professional chef and had had her own restaurant to in Tokyo, having also published two vegetarian Japanese cook books. The family friends that were staying there were a young couple with a toddler. The woman had previously worked with our hostess and the man is an architect, mostly working in Vietnam. The man spoke fairly good English and the woman could communicate too so we had good conversation for the most. I asked about the religious cabinet in the corner of the room that was full of ... read more

Hello! I’ve been really bad at keeping this updated I know, but I’ll recap and I only have two more weeks here so there won’t be much more to tell. Also, for some reason my pictures won't save, so I don't have any pictures! Anyways, the weekend of 25thmy friend Amanda and I went to Tokyo on Saturday and went to Disney Sea. We had to wake up early and get on the trains so we had plenty of time while we were there. We got lucky on our first ride because when we walked up two Japanese girls came over and gave us their fast pass tickets, so we got to go to the front of the line right away. We tried to get as many fast pass tickets as we could because the lines ... read more

Hello all! It’s been a while since I wrote, but that’s because I haven’t had too much eventful going on! Two weekends ago we had our big group picture at Kamakura. We went to Kamakura, which is where the “Big Buddha” is at. All of the Camp people who are in Japan met there and we took a picture in front of it and had a poster that some people made. We had a couple hours to do whatever we wanted so we walked around some shops and ate at a Hawaiian café! It was actually pretty good, I had French toast with bananas and chocolate. We were right by the beach and there were a ton of Hawaiian restaurants and shops. We met up with all the Camp people a little later and did beach ... read more

Konichiwa! Hey guys! I made it through orientation week and started working with the kids today! It feels like I've been here forever. We had orientation last Mon-Thurs from around 8-5 where we learned about the center, the base, the culture, just kind of an overview about the most important things we need to know. Friday was the first time we got to go off base. They took us all together to get train passes and we took the train to Kamakura and saw a temple and a shrine, not really sure what the differences are. We went to the Hachimangu shrine first and then the Hasedera temple after that. They were both really pretty, I'll try to attach pictures hopefully they work. They were both huge and the Hasedera ... read more

After my harrowing landing experience, and the days of jet lag and exhaustion that followed, things became much more enjoyable. I'm enjoying living in Tokyo, and I'm essentially settled at this point. Sadly, I feel that, while my reading comprehension has substantially improved since my last visit, my speaking has languished. I'm working to rectify this, and simply living in Japan has helped quite a bit. But I am still slow whenever I want to say something that isn't simple. Last weekend, I and another intern in the area met to visit Yokosuka. I also visited Yokosuka two years ago. When I mention this to people, the inevitable question is, "Why Yokosuka?" The answer is somewhat absurd. Imagine that one of your most inspirational, favorite movies had taken place in a town. You loved the movie ... read more

On a perfect Spring day I made the trek to hike Mt. Futago in the Zushi area. I followed directions for walk #4 in "Day Walks Near Tokyo" by Gary Walters. Beginning from the Shin-Zushi train station I walked along a small stream bordered by peaceful neighborhoods abounding with spring vegetable gardens and their diligent, elderly, retired Japanese tenders. The birds were chirping and the snap peas in full bloom. The first half of the trail was easy with some muddy areas, but nothing crazy. I continued to follow the gorgeous stream as it babbled its way through the woods, providing moisture for the propagation of many green ferns along the way. At one point I stopped to record the melody of the birds and stream because I couldn't imagine leaving there without some kind of ... read more

On a perfectly sunny day this past week I decided to endeavor a short day hike to Jimmu Temple on the Miura Peninsula, near Zushi. I followed directions from hike #2 in "Day Walks Near Tokyo" by Gary Walters. After departing the Jimmuji train I soon came to the trailhead where an elderly Japanese man was diligently caring for a sizeable bonsai garden complete with gurgling koi pond. He directed me onto the correct path and I proceeded along the greenest trail I had hiked in Japan yet. The main reason for this was the small stream rolling alongside the trail. Ferns and moss abound along the boulders and old stone steps carved by Buddhist monks were still an aide in gaining ground. It was also the quietest hike yet, where you could enjoy the smell ... read more

My first couple days in Japan were spent mostly getting accustomed to the time change. On the first night I awoke around 3am just in time to experience my first earthquake, which was nothing major, but a quick reminder of my new location in the Pacific's 'ring of fire'. On Friday, a good friend of mine just happened to be here visiting his lovely girlfriend so we all met at a sushi-go-round in Yokosuka. Picking your food from the turnstile as it passes the table is amusing and each table even had a hot water tap to facilitate green tea. We continued the night at a nearby bar with a few drinks and conversation over bouts of screaming karaoke. The weekend's weather was less than desirable, so not a whole lot was accomplished. For Saturday's dinner ... read more

Thursday (7/22/10) was the same as normal when it came to guarding and lessons. The BOQ pool again was cooler than it was before and we got ice again. We did not however get ice when we guarded at the pool later that day. After work we had to hurry because a bunch of us were going to get our hair cut out in JAPAN!! We asked a Japanese guard that we worked with if she would go with us to better communicate with the people that were going to cut our hair and of course she said yes. So as soon as we were done with work we went back and changed and then went back to the pool to pick up our Japanese friend. Then we went to the BOQ pool to pick up ... read more

Saturday (7/17/10) was back to work for the three people that were guard only (including myself). The day went smoothly. We worked pretty much all day with an hour lunch break and a half hour break somewhere during the day. There was no problem that were major, just having to say “please walk” a million times, and once in awhile having to tell parents that they needed to be in with their child. Otherwise the day went smoothly. We also had a frosting fight with the MWR staff after work. The pool allows pool parties or in other words birthday parties; a mom gave the left over cake to the lifeguards so I started a frosting fight. It turned out really cool because we took a tone of pictures and video taped us all singing a ... read more
