We have been living in Japan now for almost a month and loving everything that Japan has to offer. We reached Tokyo on Feb 5 and instantly fell in love with this country! On the way from the airport just driving through Tokyo I was thinking wow this is like NYC on steroids {Liz}. We have now been in our permanent housing for a week and just waiting for our belongings to arrive from the states. Forgot how nice it is to just live simple with just basics to make you appreciate that materials things are not what is important. Anthony & I bought bikes that we ride around to get from point A to point B around base. We now have a small little matchbox car to lug around groceries and if we just simply are being lazy to not take the bikes up the hill to our house. That is just an update on our lives right now but now to the important thing of getting to know Japan!
This weekend we decided to take a trip to Yokohama to their Chinatown since this weekend was the parade for the Chinese New Year. From reading the
history of Yokohama's Chinatown it is the largest Chinatown in Japan. From the base it took us about an hour on the train and about 3 minute walk to Chinatown in which you could tell you were headed in the right direction because of all the people headed that way. As soon as you step into Chinatown the shops and restaurants are everywhere!
We found the parade by accident when walking down a little side street and we heard the beat of drums. When we got out to the street of course there were just so many people we stood on a stoop in front of a restaurant where we wished we had one of those Iphone extend n click poles. Regardless we still got some really great pictures of the parade.
Oh the food, the food, the food! Every step there was another restaurant. We found a small restaurant where of course Anthony had some Ramen and rice. I had the shrimp in white sauce with veggies and the meal included soup, 2 meat dumplings, rice (always give the rice to Anthony), and dessert for 950 yen which is probably only about $8.50!
We have heard rumors that Japan is expensive but so far don't know if that includes eating out because we have enjoyed many meals for a great price!
We left Chinatown once our feet and knees really started to hurt. We are getting old! On the way back was actually one of the first times we really had trouble finding our way back on the train but with Anthony's practice of Japanese we managed to get home safe and sound. Once we got back we went to our favorite Thai restaurant (yes we already have a favorite Thai restaurant) haha. We learned quickly the first time we ate there that a number 3 is not the same as the states. The first bite of my Tom Yum Kung I started to sweat, nose run, & turned beat red and Anthony was wiping down his head every minute!!!
Just another great adventure in Japan and planning the next! Stay tuned!
