As the weather starts to cool , I'm realizing that our crazy summer in Japan is nearly over. The sweltering heat and humidity has given way to warm days, and warm nights. Although I'm grateful for the cooler days, I'm sad the summer is drawing to a close. It's been incredible, just really incredible. After my brothers came in June, Robert and Janet made it over here for two weeks. Then, Alex and I got to spend some serious quality time with our friends here, going to festivals, having barbecues, dancing and feasting! A few highlights: Going to Tokushima for Awa Odori, with Toshi, and her family, Nick and his mother and her boyfriend. We arrived early enough in the day to watch the crowd swell from huge to unbelievably huge! Alex and I stayed late ... read more

Well, it's been a crazy few weeks. Robert and Janet finally got to home visit us in Asia. The original plan was for them to visit us in China but as many probably already know, we got delayed in Shanghai for 33 days. Man, the Chinese government does NOT mess around! All disappointment over that trip aside, we were elated to have them come this July. I actually think that this was the better trip anyways. I love/hate China, and it can be a very stressful country to navigate. Japan, on the other hand, is chock full of helpful people and you don't have to be constantly looking over your shoulder for pickpockets. I PROMISE to add captions and detail later today. I had to work for 5 days while Alex got to travel so I'm ... read more

Just because we haven't updated in a loooong looong time, I thought I'd throw out some pictures of what we've been doing. My brothers came to visit about a month ago, and we' took a trip to the Philippines and S. Korea before that, so we have tons of photos that need sharing. Here we go!... read more

Writing about Japan instantly invokes reflection on China. For those who don't know, we're working at an English school in Marugame, Japan. Marugame is where the ninjas...I mean samurai...well, ok nothing crazy happened here. But it's a pretty sweet town, and we have pretty sweet jobs, teaching youngsters how to cuss in English. China .... even after I've been out of the that country for months, I'm still thinking about it. I'm reading about China, I'm talking about China and I'm writing about China. Never have I felt such a disconnect between my personal enjoyment and (intellectual? mental? )horror of a place. I just finished reading Oracle Bones, by Peter Hessler, which really helped clarify my thoughts. As our friend Jose said, Hessler describes China in a way I couldn't, and puts to paper my own ... read more

For me August has been the month of fireworks and dance festivals. I was lucky enough to have been able to move my Saturday night class to Thursday just this once so I could enjoy the fireworks in my home city. It had heard rumors that Marugame city had a spectacular fireworks show and they did. My apartment building is conveniently right next to the docks where they launch the fireworks. Fiona, Kazeo, Rebecca and I stood on my front porch drinking beer, chatting and watching. The show lasted 45 minutes and raised the bar for all fireworks shows that I will see in the future. The fireworks were massive and our view from the 8th floor couldn’t have been better. They even had fireworks that exploded into heart shapes and smiley faces. Even though they ... read more

Can you believe it? It has been half a year since I started teaching overseas! August 9th marked 6 months since my arrival in Japan. Living in a foreign country has been a roller coaster ride with ups and downs, but mainly it has been an unforgettable and enlightening adventure for me. Experiencing a culture first hand, learning the daily routines and watching a single place change with the seasons and slowly become familiar to you is phenomenal. Living in, instead of just visiting, a country really gives you a feel for how and why things are done. Things that had previously baffled you start to make more and more sense, but at the same time you can always find something new that leaves you with that feeling of awe. Sometimes it gets lonely living ... read more

I really wish I had brought my camera with me to my welcome party back in February. It was a multiple course traditional Japanese dinner very similar to this party we held for Naomi sensei. Naomi’s meal was the lunch version of mine so there were only seven courses instead of nine. However, this establishment boasted amazing food presentation. The food was carefully prepared and arranged. Each dish also had more variety and I felt it was more traditional than the one we had visited back in February. First course: Appetizers: Shrimp, some sort of egg roll and spring roll, edamame, and something in a seashell on the main dish. In the colorful tray of dishes there was fish in miso sauce in the center and strange foods both to the right and left. (Often in ... read more

Who wouldn’t want to live in a city with its own castle? ^_^ Everyday when I go outside I see it and I smile. Near the end of Golden Week the city holds a festival on the castle grounds on Saturday and Sunday. Primarily the festival consists of stalls selling food and various goods lining every path and street in the area. On the street in front of the castle moat they had a parade during the day and a strange dragon dancing and taiko drumming competition. Two people are in a dragon costume and they make it shake, bounce, twist and turn while the other team members (usually kids) drum out a rhythm on drums. Surprisingly on the castle grounds I saw a salsa band, apparently there is a sizable population of Argentineans in Marugame. ... read more

I was in Kagawa for two weeks before I was able to do any sightseeing. First thing I did was head for the castle I had seen in the background everyday for the past two weeks. I caught the tale end of a Sunday vegetable market near the castle. Vendors lined the street seeing flowers, plants and veggies from their farms. They were set up in front of a small park that has a few beautiful bronze statues. On the other side of the park was the castle. It is small compared to most castles I’ve seen in Japan, but it has pretty grounds and is well maintained. I am told that at the end of March the cherry blossoms bloom at the castle and the light them up at night. Inside the castle grounds there ... read more
