Today was the last of my 3 day teachers' holiday, compensation for the Saturday and Sunday we worked this past weekend for Sports Day. After spending the night in Matsuyama with friends, I biked it home with the good ol' Mama Chari and switched gears to my new big red for a day out in the sun. Biking north along route 196 the gusts were in my face, along with the sun, but the trip along the ocean was worth it. Working off the drinks and kansai pancakes last night I biked up along the coast through small fishing towns. The shrines popped up here and there. Semis flew past my shoulders, but kindly nudged over once they saw my shiny new red helmet. Ha! I finally got tired and decided to stop. Luckily I had ... read more

The typhoon is coming! Estimated time arrival: Monday, September 18th. Be prepared for all public transport to stop, downpours and strong gusts. Apparently I won't be riding my new bike to Imabari on Monday? boo hoo. But at least we get to keep Sports Day as is for tomorrow, including the enkai to follow. Instead of having SCHOOL on a SUNDAY if it rains! Humina what? Yes, that's how they do it here. All the kids have to come to school anyways so if it rains we just have classes as though it were a regular weekday. In the typhoon. But I am excited for Sports Day. I am officially on 2 dance teams now. I was added to the 1st and 2nd year dance team after it was decided unfair by the teachers for me ... read more

Is it really Thursday tomorrow? Already? I feel like the week has just begun! It has been a crazy busy week. And a week of many firsts (as is every day in Japan...). Monday I taught my first special education class. There were 3 students from 7th and 8th grade. I gave an edited version of my self introduction and then worked on the alphabet, fruit names and animals. The real kicker was my Board of Education (bosses) sent the top dog from the office to come watch me teach for the day. Definitely a nervous wreck. But what are they going to do, fire me? he. hehehe. They left with smiles on their faces which can only lead me to believe they were pleased with my work. Because they left before I was done. How ... read more

This is my first rainy Sunday. So I actully have time to sit down and work on the blog! Life has been extremely busy as of late, with the first week of school wrapping up Friday, "enkai" to attend as well as birthday parties and travel. Sitting at home this morning I am finally able to ponder the many changes affecting my life at the moment. I am settling into a routine and feeling more comfortable in my surroundings. My flat, located in the suburbia of Hojo shi, is about 20 minutes north of Matsuyama by local train. A bike ride from city center requires just under an hour, although that is considering you travel with a road bike. Many Japanese refer to my location as "inaka" but I would beg to differ. Nothing against "inaka" ... read more
