So, now that I've had a probable typical day, I feel more in the swing of things. This morning Okasan went with me on the train to Makuhari station, which was really nice of her. Tomorrow, I'm flying solo though. Today we had brush-up Japanese, and they definitely put me in the wrong class as I am learning new things, not reviewing old. Oh well. I walked to school with 6 other people, so I didn't get lost and it seems like we're meeting every day now. So that's good. I got lunch in the school cafeteria and there was another "aha" moment where I noticed all the benches, or stools rather, are hinged and so you just pull it out from under the table to sit and when you get up, it swings back under ... read more

So much has happened since I left. I can now say with experience that I hate long flights. And I have also discovered the cure for jet lag. Now, my past few days, chronologically, from Monday when I left will be described. The flight was alright but my carry-on was really heavy in addition to the no liquids nonsense. The flight to Chicago was fine, but the plane was tiny and I wanted to strangle the small child that screamed for an hour and a half. I barely made the flight to Japan, though, because the plane from Cleveland was late. I was literally the third to last person on the plane. But I did make it. And I now envy those first class seats on American Airlines. They flipping RECLINE into a bed. A bed. ... read more

Doing the soft shoe shuffle 31/07/06 We sleep for most of the 6hr flight to Narita but still arrive feeling knackered, we stagger like zombies through immigration and customs and find a space to rebuild the bikes near the bus stops. People keep wandering up to have a look (see the silly Gaijin getting hot and sweaty). Next to us is the pick up point for one of the buses to Tokyo, each time a bus leaves the porters all bow to it which is really weird to see. As we are about to leave they approach us and the best English speaker asks us where we have been and where we are going, she then translates for the others, there follows a short Q and A session about touring with the bikes then they wish ... read more

Ok, well I’m starting to actually feel like a student here. But only in these last two weeks of class have I been really forced to work. Of course, I could have had my head stuck in a book all semester long and have gotten good grades, but I wouldn’t have learned nearly as much as I have. I find it a little frustrating that I’m probably only going to get fair marks in the semester where I’ve learned more about my major than I have all through college. It’s that kinda shit that turns me off to teaching. But although I’ve been studying a relatively fair amount recently, there has been no shortage of adventures. On Friday, everyone went out to our favorite restaurant for a “pre-sayonara party.” For about 25 bucks a person, it’s ... read more

Yes, that's right. I am spending the night in the Tokyo Airport Holiday Inn. Suffice it to say that after today, I will never, EVER fly Air Canada again. We had a 3 hour delay in Toronto due to the weather so I missed my connection in Vancouver to Tokyo. Air Canada could not put me on another flight for TWO DAYS. They wanted me to pay to stay in Vancouver for two days! I threw a fit at the airport and managed to get myself onto the Japan Airlines flight that was leaving for Tokyo right away and luckily they accepted my Air Canada ticket. But I had to run down to the baggage claim and grab my backpack first because Air Canada would not send it over for me. Can you believe it? Oh, ... read more

DB-Shi has come and gone...and yes, we did do more than just drink beer and go to baseball games, I think.... :) It was sooooooo...... wonderful to have my first visitor come! I can't wait for the rest. It's hard to believe that I'll be home in a few weeks for the Sisson-Huff wedding down in Athens. I can't wait to see everyone.... Recently, my days have been busy keeping up with work, watching World Cup soccer, writing a few chapters about international food for one of my colleague's books, riding my bicycle and ummm.....sleeping, I guess. My diet consists of sushi about 5 times a week, Starbucks coffee and sandwiches....except for Tuesday nights, when we have started the tradition of cooking dinner at my house with the "boys from Kent." Siyanara for now, Di xo... ... read more

On this particular day off together, Larry and I decided to spend the majority of the day in Odaiba. Here, we revisited some of the things we've done before....only this time we had nice, sunny weather! Once again, we rode the famous Palette Town ferris wheel, had lunch overlooking Japan's Statue of Liberty, visited a cute cat store, and took a nice long walk along the beach. This time the skies were clear and we got a much better view of the Rainbow Bridge as well... On the way home, as you can see, we took full advantage of the fact that the trains were empty!! Later that night, we went to check out our first baseball game in Japan - the Chiba Marines - managed by the popular former NY Mets' manager, Bobby Valentine. Right ... read more

O'hare has been the best washroom experience ever. Heavenly smell :D The flight to Japan has also been the best airline flight ever. Individual screens to watch movies, tv shows, listen to music, and play games. The food was also quite delicious. Maybe microwave food technology is simply getting better. And so here I am in Narita Airport in Japan waiting to finish the last leg of my journey. the boringness... //// Having slept for most of the layover in Narita Airport (and man was I worried that I overslept and missed my flight!), I boarded the airplane into the business class area (referred to as Executive class :D); I was able to get into business class due to mistake in my flight tickets. The business seats were so roomy, but I was so confused on ... read more

Well I keeping with tradition of updating my blog in a coffee shop, I’m sitting here—a Seattle kid—in Starbucks drinking an enormous cup of coffee. Again, I apologize to those who don’t want to read my blog, yet get the email about my updated journal. I keep my photo-site updated somewhat regularly, so feel free to check that out. http://jetsetseattle.zoto.com/galleries Alright—onward to looking back. This last week I didn’t have class as it was Golden Week, or the whole country of Japan’s spring break. I finally made it outside of Tokyo and even managed to foray into some wilderness, but luckily made it back to my concrete jungle relatively unscathed. The trip was to the town of Fussa, about 1.5 hours west of central Tokyo, to visit my host mother’s sister (host aunt?). They planned a ... read more
