Here is the last blog of 2022! So allow me to wish all of you a wonderful New Year 2023! May this New Year be full of discoveries and many more trips for all of you!! But first, here is nearly my last trip of 2022. It won't be the last one as we spent Christmas in Bangkok....with a lot fo eating, friends and shopping obviously!! Right after celebrating my 49th birthday at home in Bali...here I am on my way to Sorong in West Papua. This is the boarding place to Raja Ampat...the last big diving mecca missing on my little diving world experience. It's also the start of 365 days of a lot more of crazy trips before reaching my own half century! You only live once, so better try to enjoy it while ... read more

The past few months have been ‘busy’. We did quite a lot of travelling, trying but often failing to travel slowly and most of it not in any way efficiently. Since our last blog post we have travelled from Alor to West-Timor (the Indonesian part of the island Timor) and then to Timor Leste (an independent country). From there with a lot of boats, busses and some planes via Nusa Penida, Bali, Singapore, Berlin and Brussels to The Netherlands. Here we have spent four weeks with our family and friends, trying to catch up with their lives and just spending quality time with the people we miss during our travelling. We then flew back to Indonesia, via KL and Jakarta to Ambon, from where we travelled across part of Maluku, visiting the Banda Islands and Kei ... read more

When, in my last blog, I said Raja Ampat had drained my resources, I wasn’t kidding. It had. Or you could say it was the straw that broke the camel’s back. I was teetering on bankruptcy before Raja Ampat, it just pushed me over the edge. However, I had already foreseen this. And I had taken measures to mitigate the consequences. What were those measures? First I moved my return flight forward, as soon as I realised my money wouldn’t last another month. Second, I cut down my spending, even in Raja Ampat, by sharing costs, and being inventive. Third I changed my plans, cutting out all but the essentials (food and accommodation) for my post-Raja Ampat period. But how did I get to this dismal situation? Me, an experienced traveller? It’s not often that I ... read more

I’ve reached the islands that have got travellers mouth wagging for the last few years, the place to be, the name you casually throw in the conversation to show how cool you are, to see others salivating at the thought, wanting to be you, to be there, to have seen what you have seen: Raja Ampat! So Raja Ampat is a hype, but is it also as good as people make it out to be? Is it worth spending your scarce money on it? Is it worth the inflated prices? That’s a difficult question to answer, because it depends on the person you talk to. Let’s start with the facts. The fact is that the prices are not at all in line with what you get. The price for sleeping in a simple hut with a ... read more

What's the superlative of beautiful? Extremely beautiful? Extraordinarily beautiful? Awe-inspiringly beautiful? What if none of these fits the bill? I have come to such a place, for a fleeting moment and then it was gone, like an otherworldly sunset that disappears beyond the horizon. But how did I get there? It was a long trek. It started with me landing in Bali, after my sojourn in Perth. I had a week to spare. Why? Because the boat that would take me near the place I have mentioned above (but not to it), would only leave in a week... from Tual, which you might remember lies on the Kei Islands. I decided to spent that week on Bali rather than the Kei Island, however pretty they are. It would be slightly cheaper, plus it gave me the ... read more

I never thought, that I could fly in my life by a small plane. All my life I thouht that the small jets are only for people with money. But, the day when I had this opportunity came. And I really can say, that it worth the money to try. We had booked the small Jet for the trip in West Papua to the tribe living in a small village in the deep jungles. This tribe became famous after a Book of Sabina Kugler "Jungle Kind" and after the book the Movie with the same name came to the World. The tribe where we went - Fayu tribe. They live in Memberamo Velley on the Deru River. Deru has a simple translation - River. So, they live in the river with the name River. About village ... read more

Once upon a time... Or no. This January we were happy to visit our papua friends in Jayapura. Sitting on a coach with a hot cofee, we were chatting about our life. Word by word, we told Yulia (she is a papua girl who we met our last trip and made a friend) about the movie we watched one evening in Germany. That was "Jungle child" about Sabine Kugler - the girl from Germany, who spent many years with her family in the Fayu tribe in the jungles of West Papua. It was interesting to see, how european people could manage the life with the native tribe. - Oh! - smiled Yulia and pointed the house opposit, - That is the house of Sabina's father and I know Pastor Teis, who was the student of Pastor ... read more

We travelled from Bali to Sorong, via a connecting flight through Makassar, followed by a local ferry to Waisai, located off the West coast of Papua in the far East of Indonesia. Our final destination being the remote archipelago of Raja Ampat comprising one thousand five hundred small islands and part of the tropical coral triangle linking Indonesia, Malaysia, Timor Leste, The Solomon Islands, and The Phillipines. With little information on the internet and having travelled such a distance we were curious about what these remote islands would reveal. Due to cost and time restrictions we picked one of the islands to visit. Based on a brief description on the internet and a few pictures, we chose the island of Kri because of its accessible coral reef. The only contact we had when booking our stay ... read more

One of the things this area of Papua is known for is the elusive Bird Of Paradise. We needed to escape the heat and noise of the city so decided we'd take a walk in the surrounding countryside to see if we could spot one. We'd also read about a Pagoda giving good views of Sorong and the ocean beyond but no information as to how to get to it. After much asking around in our hotel and getting nowhere we got the information we needed from the odd job man! He could speak better English than the receptionist! He told us it was a two kilometres walk so must get a bus. He couldn't believe we were actually going to walk. It turned out his directions were spot on and we found the hill taking ... read more

Most days while on the island of Kri we followed the same routine, breakfast , snorkel, shower, walk along the jetty, lunch, laze on the beach, more snorkelling, shower , dinner ..... You get the idea. There was a boat trip planned for Friday to visit the Fam islands and viewpoint from where you get the view that everyone associates with Raja Ampat. The day started grey and cloudy as we jumped on the boat at 7.30am, a bit of a disappointment as we'd hoped to get the perfect picture also the snorkelling isn't so good with a cloudy sky. Soon after setting off one of the boat's engines failed so we limped along on the other while an attempt was made to fix it. Finally we were off but then the first engine broke down. ... read more
