When you look one in the eyes for the first time, it happens. In the wild; in their home… It’s like looking into the eyes of a friend, or some long lost relative that is elated to make your acquaintance. A sense of connection bridges the gap of species difference, and millennia of evolution and biodiversity are summed up in one moment, by one feeling. And one look deep into a mother’s eyes tells you an instant story of hardship, happiness, and life. This mother’s name is Jackie. She is a person of the forest. “Orangutan” in Malay means “person of the forest.” However, to the local Sumatran people, they are known as “mawas,” meaning “free.” Sadly, this has become an outdated and thus ironic term. Orangutans once flourished throughout all of the Southeast Asian jungles. ... read more

(Day 376 on the road) The main reason to come to Bukit Lawang in the Gunung Leuser National Park is to view the Orang Utansliving here. Once upon a time, these wonderful creatures were living in various parts of South East Asia, but today they are only found in very few places in northern Sumatra and on Borneo. In Bukit Lawang, between 5000 and 7000 wild Orang Utans are thought to live, and the place is easily accessible from the city of Medan. Orang Utans are quite fascinating: Their genes are 97% identical with human. They can weigh as much as 90kg, and the span of their arms can be as much as 2 metres. And their name is Malay and means "person of the forest". Bukit Lawang became famous when the WWF and the Frankfurt ... read more

Day 267: Monday 23rd March - My spirits lifted by the forest people I arrived in Medan last night at around 10pm. After 8 months in the southern hemisphere I’m back in the northern hemisphere. To pass time on my two hour flight from Jakarta I reflected back on my time in the southern hemisphere. I got two months in before we landed - so many happy times and lifelong memories to look back on. Much of the last week I’ve spent on my own and in this time my thoughts have often strayed home. Many travellers I’ve met who have been doing long trips have told me that there is often a time during your journey when you feel homesick. I think my time in Indonesia has coincided with this period for me. Whether it ... read more

First of all, apologies to all of you who have sent emails over the last ten days or so, but I haven’t seen the internet since leaving Toba - alas the 21st century hasn’t quite penetrated the throbbing jungles of North Sumatra just yet. However, you will be pleased to hear that I’ve actually done stuff this time, so hopefully episode two will be a little more interesting than the previous entry… I’d met up with a couple of guys in Toba, Mats from Oslo and Tim from Alkmaar, and we made the semi-tortuous eight hour journey (these roads truly set the bar when it comes to spine-jarring and axel-destroying potholes) to Bukit Lawang, a small village perched on the edge of the Gunung Leuser National Park. Bukit Lawang was completely devastated by a massive flash ... read more

So we left Georgetown and made our way to the port to get our ferry over to Sumatra. The ferry crossing took us across the Mallaca Strait, the strip of sea which seperates Peninsular Malaysia from Sumatra. Historically this area was a prime hunting ground for pirates and it still has occasional problems today although incidents are becoming increasingly rare. However the pirates of today aren't swashbuckling Johnny Depp look-a-likes but instead they ride around on speed boats and carry machine guns, which doesn't seem quite as cool. We got across ok though and the sea was nice and calm. The ferry dropped us of in Sumatra in a place called Belawan and we then got shuttled to the city of Medan. Unfortunately we had to spend a night here as we were too late to ... read more

Sumatra.... 'Why Sumatra?', I hear you ask. And no it's nothing to do with a book of 'those' positions - that's the Karma Sutra you bunch of pervs. Well ,the real reason is that after watching the late Steve Irwin do a documentary with the Orangutans in Borneo I thought that maybe by visiting them, all my questions about being ginger could be answered by these 'men of the forest'. Plus in return I could share with them the hardships of being the only ginger in the class when growing up in 1970s Gloucestershire. Thus paving the way for some primate - homo sapien bonding, making the world a better place. Hmmm maybe. But anyway before this, I had to get thro Medan..... Getting there.... First impressions of Medan weren't good. Well it was cool ... read more

We left Medan in the morning for BL for some jungle action, we caught a local bus, this bus was funny, again it should of been scrap but it got us there, we even had chickens on the bus. The heavens opened when we arrived, walked to our guesthouse(bungalows) called Garden Inn, and it was lovely, bunaglows made of wood, quite open around the edges (always makes me nervous)massive rooms with our own balcony overlooking the river and lush jungle. In the morning we see our first Oran-utan, 2 of them walking along the river to the feeding platform, it was amasing, just a great feeling to see them in the wild when you only hear and see them on the TV, they are bigger than we expected but just as handsome and they look so ... read more

"I, like, hate Medan," said my 17-year old brother of the capital of North Sumatra. I don't quite agree with him, but I don't love city either. The entire metropolis reminded me of the outskirts of Kathmandu -like, the area near Tribhuvan that's a run-down shamble old bricks, mangy monkeys and polluted rivers. I didn't see any wildlife in Medan itself, but I enjoyed having a beer at a pub on a small lane adjacent to the beautiful mosque on J.I. Raya. In fact, sipping a large Bintang and listening to the 'call to prayer' live just a few dozen meters away leaves me with an indelible memory. But one night in the capital was plenty, and by 10am the following morning, we were in a van on our way to Bukit Lawang, legendary home of ... read more

We arrived in Bukit Lawang in some heavy rain fall...but after our 54 hour trip to get here, we didn't care about having to walk another kilometer in the rain to our guest house! Our stop over in Cairo...where there was no European Cup final to see since they had not the right connection....Arriving late in Kuala Lumpur.....take a taxi to an hotel....which was fully booked....we were so happy we could finaly relax and sit down....an our guesthouse (Garden Inn) in Bukit Lawang was the best place for it. Close to the Bohorok river with steep mountains at each side with thick vegetation this was an absolutely great place. After a relaxed day we were ready to go on a 3 day trip in the jungle We started the trip with a group of five travelers ... read more

Thursday June 26, 2008 - Leticia and i got on the bus to Bukit Lawang with a local who asked us a few questions but not too many. Could this be our guide that the Lonely Planet said would be waiting for us? It was indeed. After three and a half hours of being stuck like sardines in this bus and sleeping (everytime I'm in a moving vehicle now I get sleepy, like a baby) we were there and he was asking us where we were going to stay, etc. He was a guide and he had two people signed up for a trek the next day. So he got us settled in a room for $3 that we agreed to split and then gave us the sale, along with his pal who would be the ... read more
