Day Twenty-Five - Just Get Us to HK Today wouldn’t be great, we knew that. Essentially it was another three-hour offroading, moped avoiding, potholing, buttock clenching drive; a long wait in the rundown remnants of an airport last graced with modernity in 1983; a flight taking off on one of the most dangerous runways in the world; and a short kip in a transit hotel before our much anticipated flight back to HK. You get days like this travelling, sometimes they are unavoidable but they still suck. We got out of the rooms early and relaxed over breakfast. Leanne even took time to paddle in the river before our 4x4 arrived and Shannon picked up a few trinkets. The journey back was predictably painful although the ATMs this time were much friendlier. With no discount for ... read more

Day Twenty-Four - I’m A Crapple, Get Me Out of Here I've done a lot of hiking in the Mournes and so liked the thought of trekking in the jungle an awful lot. However, I think the idea of trekking appeals much more than the reality though. I actually don't like hiking too much. The Mournes are fairly bland and a dander up Ben Crom has me content for the day. I did it for years strangely. And I actually don't like trekking much either or at least I found that out today. We came to Bukit Lawang to see the orang-utans and trek into the jungle of Gunung Leuser. I pushed for this when we were considering itineraries and I happily agreed to a three-hour trek followed by some rafting today. I wasn't so keen ... read more

Day Twenty-Three - Shanitood Surly but Sweet Sixteen I could have lain in bed all day but the lovely Tune shower melted away any last aches as Angela went next door to calm the Shanitood and of course wish her a happy birthday. I think Leanne kept her up for part of the night and Shannon’s grumpier alter ego has emerged (again). We checked out, took a cab to KLCC and settled in a DeliFrance in the bowels of Suria Mall for breakfast. After topping up on supplies we took the LRT to KL Sentral, checked in our bags and took the Expres to the airport - much nicer than the bus & half the time for twice the price, works for me. At KLIA we got some lunch we knew it would be a while ... read more

After we got our visas for India we took the next flight to the North of Sumatera. We got in to the capital of Northern Sumatera and quickly got a bus up to Bukit Luwang. It was so nice up there. It was not to hot and it was just a quiet village so it was a nice change for us. The 1st day we just chilled and checked out a bat cave that was a little scary on our own. A guy there had a python and a moon snake that he had as pets. The next day we went on a jungle trek that was very hot and sweaty. It was the best trek that we have been on by far. There were so many wild animals. We saw, scorpions, monkeys, and wild ... read more

19th - 21st Still lots more chilling going on at Lake Toba and not an awful lot else. Bought ourselves some little souvenirs and decided the 22nd would be out last day here as we were starting to feel restless. 22nd We decided to head to Bukit Lawang - a jungle area in the North of Sumatra with an Orangutan sanctuary. As it was a two leg journey of 3/4 hours a piece we decided to stay a night in Medan en route - Sumatra's capital. It took us 4 hours in another cramped, sweaty mini-bus to get there. Medan was another classic Indonesian city - too hot, busy, smoggy, lots of hassle, chaos, but this time we were slightly more prepared, this being our fourth city this trip. We arrived on the opening day of ... read more

We included Sumatra in our Indonesian itinerary for the sole reason of visiting Bukit Lawang where they have a conservation programme reintroducing Orangutans back into the wild, as many as 5,000 wild ones are also thought to live in this area. Here they have a good opportunity to see them when they visit the feeding platform twice a day which is just inside the Gunung Leuser National Park. Our friends had visited it earlier in the year and said it was lovely and we were keen to see as much of Sumatra as possible so it was included as our first Indonesian stop. Our 7.30am flight from KL to Medan meant us getting up at 2.30am to get the first bus from central KL to the airport. We had thought it would be easy walking at ... read more

Yet again I start with an apology. This time, its that the highlight of Bukit Lawang undoubtedly was trekking in the jungle with orangutans. However, my camera had packed up by then, and thus no orangutan photos. I'm still hoping that one of the folk I trekked with will get round to sending me them one day, but until then, you'll have to make do with the residue of my photos Im afraid. See the monkeys see the birds, see orangutan. Sing that to the tune of Jingle Bells, and you've got the hottest song around the place. But I'm getting a little bit ahead of myself. From Penang, I flew to Medan, the largest city in Sumatra, which happens to be a little bit rubbish. From there I got a bus to Bukit Lawang. Right, ... read more

Hi All! (for english please see below) Wow... mijn eerst blog.

The 4am morning sermon at the SM Raja mosque was an unwelcoming wake up call for the day ahead. Nik had also developed a rash and swelling on her hands and feet the night before so were unsure whether we could even make it to Bmukit Lawang! What next for Nik!? Nevertheless we decided to make the 3 hour journey and chose to go in a tourist minibus direct from our hotel rather than trek across the chaos of Medans streets to the bus station. After escaping the polluting city roads we found ourselves traveling through an endless "plethora" of palm oil "jungle" plantations regimented in lines which were far more organized than the morning bustle we had just passed through. Below the palm oils, skinny cows harvested the limited undergrowth and there was an earthy ... read more
