Merry Christmas to all our friends and family. We hope your holidays are safe, peaceful and a time to be with loved ones. We spent the last 3 weeks on Lombok Island in Indonesia. We really loved our time there. We took the slow boat over from Bali (5 hours on a large public ferry), but made it to Gili Air by dinner time (a small island off of Lombok). We rented a house for 12 days in the village near the centre of the island. We were still only a 5 min. bike ride to the beach. There are no vehicles or motorcycles allowed on Gili Air - only horses, carts and bicycles. The internet was slow or non-existant which was a nice break for me. The only noises were the sounds of the roosters ... read more

As it turned out, Surf lessons were $90 per person so, deciding that we were bound to be inate surfers anyway we headed to the beach... As it turned out only one of us was a natural (no surprises that it was Emma) Fortunately the local guy we rented the boards from decided to throw in a crash course for the cost of a Sprite or two. On only her second attempt, Emma, with confidence oozing as if channeling John Wayne caught the wave all the way to the shore while offering a nonchelant salute for the watching crowds... It took me a few more facefulls of saltwater but eventually we were both surfing and feeling very pleased with ourselves. Our noses and shoulders the following day were not so happy given that we burnt them ... read more

It's the 17th December and it couldn't feel any less like Christmas. We've been on Gili Air for the past few days but I'll tell you about that shortly. Before Air we had spent five days on Gili Trawangan. Gili T is the largest of the three islands situated 10km off the north coast of Lombok but is still only a few kilometres long. We moved after our first night to a new place that served a great breakfast and had a good bed with nice clean white sheets (a bit of a luxury out here it seems). The breakfast really was great and well worth crawling out of bed for. Delicious, ripe mango, pineapple, banana and water melon followed by a nice omelette and coffee. A great way to start our days there. Most of ... read more

I am sitting here, staring on the screen and thinking what I could write. Can inactivity and relaxing harm the creativity? Apparently it can. Okay, I'll give it a try now. Ryan's entry finished with us cooling down in the pool I think. So, yeah, we cooled down in the pool and chilled in the sun and cooled down in the pool again on our first day in Ubud. This was completely exhausting so we had a nice little nap before we went to get some nice food for dinner. Afterwards we met up with the Dutch couple and Paul for a drink in the XL Shisha Lounge and then we went to bed. Very unexciting but relaxing. The next day started with a refreshing swim in the pool and a nice breakfast served on our ... read more

Our new adventure to Lombok and the Gili Islands started with a 2 hour speed boat ride from Bali to Lombok. On arrival at the ferry terminal, a basket of individually wrapped seasickness tablets (soon to become known as 'pink pills') was offered around to all with a warning that they could make you sleepy and one was more than enough! I think my experiences in Oz on the racing yacht and the liveaboard dive trip cured me of any seasickness that I did have so politely declined. Once on board and on our way, the rest of the group all seemed to go into a comatose state for the next two hours with some of them only waking up as we were arriving at Lombok! We jumped off onto the beach and got all our ... read more

From Flores we made our way back westward, over six days, through Sumbawa and Lombok, to Bali, for our flight to Darwin, Australia. The most notable aspect of our short time in Sumbawa was Ben riding on the roof of a mini-bus for two hours, with about 15 locals, none of whom seemed to speak any English. Sadly, no photos are available. Only the mental scars. After an arduous 27 hour journey that took in two ferries, the aforementioned minibus, a comfortable coach and a bemo (a mini-mini bus - often found providing transport to the Indonesian public), we arrived in the chilled out coastal village of Kuta, Lombok. Some of you will know Kuta, Bali. The Lombok namesake could not be much more different. It is wonderfully traffic and trouble free. Whether this will change ... read more

Western Lombok is where Islam meets Hinduism, on an island dominated by the former. A large Hindu procession took place on the streets of Mataram, under the light of the full moon. Locals, dressed in white shirts and hats, with colourful sarongs and sashes, walked the long road up to Cakranegara. Drums and xylophones play the traditional ‘gamelan’ music – strangely discordant to the unaccustomed on first hearing. Our two young Muslim chaperones are stopped and questioned by the police regarding their presence at the Hindu event. This seems ridiculous, as it’s a public street. No matter – they gesture to us, and the police are satisfied. We chat to locals, including one who, improbably, lived in Norway for eight years, and has two sons there, from a past marriage. There is more than a small ... read more

Monday morning marked our departure from Gili Trawangan, one of the three Gili Islands. Gili Island a tautological travesty of a name - Gili means (small) island in the Bahasa Indonesian language. So Island Islands it is, it seems. Anyway, pedantry aside, 'the Gilis' are the sort of place where one can easily spend far more time than originally intended. Gili Trawangan is the largest - but can be strolled around in under two hours - and the most developed - but half its perimeter is deserted. All buildings on 'Gili T', with the exception of the new mosque, are single or two storey, and consist mostly of dive centres, restaurants selling straight-out-of-the-sea fresh seafood, and accommodation to suit every budget. The dusty unpaved streets are free from motorised transport. This is the home of the ... read more

Spending our last day in Gili Trawangan, where we have had a 'diveful' time. We got out PADI Advanced Open Water diver's certificate, allowing us to dive down to 40m, and we took our first photos of these lovely species. We did see three reef sharks, but not when we had the camera, believe us if you want! For all sea lovers, learn to scuba dive, it's awesome! ... read more

To start the day off Benny brought us breakfast at 5:30am. A little early considering our pickup was schedule for 7:00am. After eating we went back to bed and at 6am we got a knock on our door saying our ride was here. I repeat, WHAT IS WITH INDONESIA ALWAYS BEING EARLY??? In the van I was talking with a couple from Quebec. She buys jewelry and then wholesales it back home. Anyway, later she saw us looking in our Lonely Planet and asked if we needed help with accommodation. We said that’d be great, and it turns out her and her hubby own some bungalows. For 200,000 idr ($22) we are staying a year old bungalow with a big bed and open roof shower, very modern. No air con but it gets pretty cool at ... read more
