We arrived...we finally arrived. After our dreadful ride we were ready to collapse and that is what we did. Our exciting Christmas Eve consisted of waking up from a nap at 11:00pm, realizing all the restaurants were closed, and going back to bed. We left Santa a nice cold Bintang (Indonesian beer) and some mie gorengs (fried noodles)...lol. We woke up refreshed and ready for a Christmas day expedition to a Hindu temple in the morning, and a Buddhist temple in the afternoon. After stocking up on water and tim-tams (Australian cookies, probably the best in the world!) we plunged head first into ancient Indonesia and Prambanan, the Hindu temples from the 9th century. Unfortunately the temple had been damaged in a May earthquake and wasn't fully opened to the public (you can see it partitioned ... read more

So, continuing from my last entry the bus ride was indeed a classic Asian bus ride. Terrible, awful, woeful, are adjectives quick to come to mind. After boarding the bus at 7:00pm we settled into our seat near the back expecting to arrive in Yogyakarta by 3 or 4am. Now I have traveled quite a few countries in Asia now, so I don't expect buses to leave on time, nor even a little late, but this was bad even by Asian standards. The Jakarta bus terminal is massive holding hundreds of buses. Now whoever designed this terminal deserves a death similar to Saddam (not encouraging the death penalty, nor approving of how Iraq handled the hanging) but hundreds of buses are trying to leave the one exit, and we were unfortunate enough to be leaving during ... read more

We arrived in Yogyakarta on a very nice bus from Semarang. For 40,000 rp (under 3 quid) you got air con, reclining seats and a snack box, we were most impressed. We were also impressed by Duta Guesthouse, which had beautiful gardens, a pool and a bathtub (although the water had black bits in it), even an open air garden in the bathroom! On our first full day we visited the Kraton, the old part of the city containing the Sultan's palace. The palace itself was interesting but it is starting to get quite tiring whenever we step outside several people will descend on you to offer you taxi rides/food and drink/any amount of souveneirs. It is virtually impossible to sit down and look at your map or guidebook without being continually harrassed. Bah! The following ... read more

After we spent the morning at the Borobudur we set our sites on the Prambanan. This Hindu temple was created in the ninth century and consists of a large court that housed a massive temple dedicated to the god Shiva, the Destroyer, surrounded two medium and five smaller temples. Outside of the main courtyard on a lower level were four rings of crumbled ruins from temples erected by local chieftains. The main temple was unfortunately fenced off because of the earthquake in May 2006 that severely damaged the area. A few of the temples were wrapped in scaffolding as crews tried to stop them from toppling. The main temple dedicated to Shiva set in the center of the court was relatively undamaged whereas the two medium temples dedicated to the gods Brahma, the creator, and Vishnu, ... read more

Yogajakarta- We came here to see the Borobudor and the Prambanan. We did not tour the city and elected to use a guide. We felt being interior Java, which is mostly Muslim and their general dislike of the USA (Scott of course is Canadian but really by seeing and hearing us who can tell the difference) that we would keep a low profile. Our guide told us it as perfectly safe in Yogajakarta for tourists but in Solo (30km away) that it could be dangerous. Do radicals not own cars? Such a short distance to claim complete safety. Considered the greatest Buddhist temple the Borobudur has the largest Buddhist stupa created. The giant bell shaped structure sits on the top of several tiers ringed with smaller stupas. Each stupa once contained a seated Buddha statue though ... read more

The air hung heavy with heat and humidity and the stagnant smell of clove ciggarettes. I was tempted to smoke too - anything just to kill time. The man up ahead was enacting a sort of repetitous rhythm: light, inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale... His breath was the only means by which the air around us moved. Thin strands of smoke weaved and danced their way upwards until they slowed, merged and eventually hung as though suspended where the air became so heavy that all movement ceased. Time could be measured by the amount of smoke that filled the interior, as one ciggarette gave way to the next. The outside world grew hazier while inside it became harder to breathe. Without warning, the engine was ignited and we were suddenly thrust onto the highway. A wall of ... read more

Right well. i left bali there a week ago before finishing my dive caosre and driving around on my moped, and runnign into the police who decided they would have lots of my money and little i could do about that. but ah well moved onto java now Been venturing around a good bit. my first stop was a small town called probolingo and from there i went to an active volcanio called mount grunung bromo, and lucky for me it was extremly active the day i went and sulphur was popping out the top and the government was advising people not to go within 1 km of it. so i decided to go up the mountain beside it which was 2400 m high and 6 km walk up and 6 km back down. and was ... read more

Well I think last time I wrote I must have been in Surabaya. We've been working our way west and have seen the places affected by the latest disasters in Indonesia. We stayed a few days in Solo, a nice quiet town with tons of nice scenery. I even did a Batik painting course for a day in which we designed and made t-shirts. Mine turned out pretty good and it was surprising since it is a long difficult process of applying wax and then colours. I'll have to put on some sweet pictures when I find a decent internet place. There were some amzing ancient temples in the area, and lately we've been taking all local transportation and motorbikes so even the journey to get there is part of the fun. It helps that I ... read more

Okay, the title is a bit alarming so I will start by saying that I am now safely in Gili Trawangan, a small Island off Lombok, near Bali. (Nowhere near Merapi.) Back in Java though, we woke up one morning prepared to go out and restock the van with supplies and head back out for another round of relief work. We had only one problem: our driver and van were missing. Yes, missing. At first I was not alarmed - perhaps he had just popped out to get some petrol? As the hours passed we became concerned for us and for him. We spoke to hotel security who called in the “secret police” (two plain-clothed dudes who were reluctant to show me any identification but did in the end when I thanked them for coming out ... read more

Warning: Please do not read this unless you are prepared for the worst. The stories and pictures contained in this entry are very unpleasant and difficult to digest. The light version is that we spent the day handing out food and doing first aid for people with minor injuries. The heavy version is, well, heavy. Please post your comments - I will pass them on to our team and to the people. I did not know what to expect. I mean, sure, I had some idea - broken buildings, injured people, smashed infrastructure -- but no real concept of how it might be when we got here. Arriving in Jogja (Yogya) did not make it any easier. I mean, sure there was some damage, but most of what we saw initially was superficial or, if ... read more
