So much more than Bali
Glad the sultan in charge of Yogyakarta is modern and friendly. The Sultan of Morotai wouldnt let us drop anchor in his waters. Its amazing when you see these worlds colliding but somehow, it works. Love the food pics too :)

Not to compare...
I hate to admit it, because Bali is stunningly beautiful, but I kind of liked Yogya better than Bali. We were there during a religious festival where everyone walked from a small town to the large temple at Borobodur. We really liked Prambanan also. Your comment on the heat reminded us of the only part that I don't miss. Glad you had fun!

Wow that festival would've been amazing. I went to Borobudur yesterday morning and saw the most perfect sunrise. I'm really loving it here so far!

More than Bali
How lucky you Aussies to have exotic Indonesia, with its mix of religions, so close! Your visits to the palace and Prambanan sound wonderful--I'd never heard of the latter, only of Borobudur, so how great to learn of yet another magical spot there. A friend, a pool and happy hour--a perfect ending!

Well there has to be some benefits in living at the bottom of the world, although that said it was still over 7 hours to fly to Jakarta...you just do what you gotta do when you have the travel bug. Prambanan was incredible and like you I hadn't heard of it before. It was definitely worth the visit though.

It all sounds very interesting. Yes don't ask too many questions at an animal market. Pool looks inviting. We are off to gol very shortly. We had a lovely Easter weekend and the central districts were the hottest in nz at 26 degrees which was lovely.

I've always pushed the barrow for Java over Bali. Great you have taken the plunge. Isn't the Hindu Prambanan a revelation with its ancient Buddhist temples alongside showing religious tolerance over the centuries?

I'm joining you in the Java promotion club, although it's nice not to be overrun with Aussie tourists like in Bali so maybe we should keep it quiet. Yes, Prambanan was amazing, a real surprise for me.

i always love yogya
glad that you enjoy yogya, i always love yogya because its culture and yeah the food too, and the salad its named gado-gado :). maybe youll visit surabaya sometimes, its has a lottttt historical building and so many foodies too, you can check here http://matome.id/729

I just love travel days that end with 'Happy hour was calling us!'. I feel slightly bad for Bali...especially because it's Australians who have given that small part of the island a bad name.

I still love Bali and have some very happy memories of that place. That said, I couldn't believe how much it was developed between my visits in 2004 and 2011. I felt a bit sad about it....not sure I'll be back, even though it's a gorgeous place.

Chilled out and optimistic feel
We love going to UNESCO World Heritage Sites. They always have so much to offer. Tracking the Sultans family tree would be a full time job. Love the look on the security guards face.

You're right - I've thought about a world tour of World Heritage Sites before, I think it would be fun. Yes, the Sultan's family tree was amazing! Very beautifully drawn, they are pretty incredible.
