Wednesday morning we took a surprisingly pleasant 9 hour train ride from Jakarta to Yogyakarta (Jogja). We saw more rice paddies than I can describe, which led me to wonder how on earth rice is so cheap! It looks like back breaking work from what we could see. But the fields of bright green terraced rice are really beautiful.

Jogja is a much more tourist friendly city than Jakarta and so far we are really enjoying it. Today we went to Parambanan a big set of Hindu temples and ruins just east of the city. Again we were feeling very loved by the Indonesians, however it has gone to a whole new level. Today on several different occasions people have asked to take a picture with us…not for us to take a picture of them in front of the ruins, no…they giggle and ask to take a picture WITH us, “Mister, Miss! I take picture with you?“ then they stand between Sam and I and have a friend take our picture…once it was a bit odd, twice it was funny but by the 5th or 6th time I was wondering what they were thinking. Either:
A. they think we are famous (all white people look alike, right?)
B. They think we are freakishly tall (if so it is going to be out of control once we meet up with other Sam)
C. They just think we are weird looking all together.

Still unclear as to what is going on. So far it has been three teenage boys and 2 late teen/maybe 20 year old girls. The best was them trying to sneakily take a picture of just us as we walked by, when I saw the camera the girl giggled and put the camera down quickly…very weird, but hilarious.

Tomorrow we are going to Borobudur, the giant Buddhist temples just West of Jogja…I’ll keep you updated as to our fame status over there.

Lots of Love!
~Caitlin

You must be famous
Hi to you both. I think that the Indonesians know that you are rich and famous and that you are traveling with a bucket of adventure. Where is the travel Lady Gnomad. I can't wait to hear about Borobudur. I will also send you an email about our travel to L.V. Love Mom

The pride to be with foreigners
Dear Caitlin, Thanks for being patient and keeping on smile for us, Indonesians. Please be informed how proud the guys would be when they show the pictures to their friends and relatives for being able to practice their English eventhough only few words. For high school students, the occasion to be able to speak English with English-speaking people is rare. Thus, the time they approached you was their real experience practising what they learn in the classroom. When they sneakly took the picture, that's the characteristic of most Indonesian young people, especially the villagers: they are shy but they really want to have the pictures. Have fun and cheers.... Emanuel
