From Bangkok we flew to Java Indonesia... I was sure with a name like Java I could put away the Nescafe for a week or two... I could have yes... but you wouldn't have either! Anyhow, we flew into Java via Jakarta and took a train into the "smaller" city of Bogor. Bogor is known world wide for its botanical gardens established by Sir Simon Raffles and remains today a hub of botanical research and science. When we were there we sadly found it in some disrepair, and as tourists are permitted to "drive through", it did not turn out to be the majestic setting we had read about. Indonesia is home to the 2nd or 3rd largest population in SE Asia and the island of Java itself carries 50% of the Indonesian population at an ... read more

We're currently in the CIVAS (Centre for Indonesian Veterinary Analytical Studies - www.civas.net) office stationed in Bogor, Indonesia and we're having an incredible time. So far our first week has focussed on learning about the AI situation in Indonesia and all of its complexities. We have visited large scale and smaller scale poultry farms, poultry collecting facilities (which act as middlemen between poultry farmers and local markets/buyers), Halal slaughter facilities, and smaller community-based poultry farming operations. We're also in contact with researchers from Colorado State University who are beginning some new AI prevalance studies. We've been able to brush up on our clinical skills by practicing blood collection, and tracheal and cloacal swabs on local chickens and ducks. Our CIVAS hosts have been fantastic in helping us adjust to life in Indonesia. Without them we'd b ... read more

We landed in Java and then went straight down to Bogor where there some botanical gardens. We then headed up to a place called Bandung which was described somewhere as the Paris of Asia. What a load of old shit! Nothing much happened in either place, so we are not going to write about them, but here are a few pics.... read more

Bogoriin tulimme vanhasta tottumuksesta suoraan Jakartan lentokentältä Damri-bussilla.

The drive from the Jakarta International Airport to the neighbouring city of Bogor was a little like wading through soup; hot, humid and smoggy enough to completely cloak the outline of Jakarta in a dense fog. After a couple hours in gridlocked traffic, we arrived in Bogor, Western Java, at the offices of the Center for Indonesian Veterinary Analytical Studies (CIVAS). The office consisted of a converted house in suburban Bogor and would serve as our home for the next two weeks. The people at CIVAS, which is the only veterinary NGO based in Indonesia, were extremely hospitable host and made us feel right at home, save the fact we had to showerusing a bucket and that we were encouraged to eat everything (including rice) with our hands. CIVAS is dedicated to improving the health and ... read more

Anyhow, Indonesia: our last stop for Team Southeast Asia but I will be going onward to the Singapore Zoo for my last two weeks in Asia. We are in a city called Bogor, about 60 km south of Jakarta in West Java. We are working with a veterinary NGO here, CIVAS (Centre for Indonesian Analytical Studies) which was formed in 2005. Despite being such a young organization, they have accomplished a lot and I’m very impressed with the work they have done. The origins of the group lay largely in the concern of a few recent vet grads with the avian influenza problem in Indonesia. Just so you know, they have had the highest number of cases of avian influenza H5N1 in humans (102) and the most deaths (82) and continue to have outbreaks of many ... read more
