Background Eleven years ago, Lorenza and I decided to sponsor a child through Child Fund Australia. We contacted the organisation via the phone and within a few weeks we were sent the details of a child they had selected for us in Indonesia. The details they sent us included a lovely photo and the following details: “Maria Yensiana was born into a desperately poor family in East Nesu Tengarra. She lives with her parents, grandparents and one elder brother, in a small house with bad sanitation and no private bathroom. Her father tries hard to earn a living by working as a peasant, but he earns very little that it is impossible to meet the family’s needs. Her mother, although resourceful at trying to make the most of the little, cannot do much with her husband’s ... read more

In Indonesia or maybe just travelling in general things never quite go a planned. I got up intending to the catch the public bus to Ende and then the boat over to Timor tomorrow and I went to bed having decided to return to the Togean Islands. Trying to get to Ende I bumped into some others that had a private car going for just 25000 each so forgetting about the public bus six of us with a driver and a local took the car to Ende about two hours away. Once there three of them were going to the airport, two to Bajava and I was spending the night. The local guy that had travelled with us helped me find out the boat information to Timor but everyone seem to be asking why are you ... read more

Hey guys! Sorry about the complete lack of blog for the last 2 weeks or so! It has really been a hectic few weeks here in Flores. Pretty much go, go, go, go, sleep, go, go, go, go, sleep, go, go, go, crash...you get the idea. Where to even begin in sharing what has been going on here?! Well I'll just quickly explain the title...this is what i hear every 5 minutes when i walk out of the hotel. Everyone in Flores wants to know where I'm going and wants to give me a lift in their pimped out, pretty dodgey looking taxi/mini-van thing (seriously weird looking taxis...they are a bit like that car you see driving around at night revving it's engine and pumping music really loud with it's neon underlight thing...it's a boy racer ... read more

Well we finally made it to Flores, 3 days after first planned. After not being able to get tickets for Wednesday as we hoped to, we then booked for Friday and when Friday came we went to the airport, checked in and found out an hour later that our flight had been cancelled so we got put up in a hotel and flew the next day. It was actually quite nice to be able to spend some time as a team praying for each other and just chilling...we even got to watch the royal wedding live! Fun fact: the next island we're going to (Lombok) is actually where Will and Kate will be having their honeymoon so may see them. The chances are they'll stick out like a sore thumb, not because they are royalty but ... read more

30 November 2009 - 01 December 2009 TRANSPORT: Bajawa to Bus Terminal by ojek--Rp5,000 Bajawa to Ende by bus--Rp50,000 (4 hours) Bus Terminal to Ende by ojek--Rp5,000 HOTEL: Hotel Dwi Putra Double, A/C, cold water, western toilet--Rp125,000 inc breakfast. The only place really to stay in Ende, it's not great. The A/C didn't work properly, the breakfast was cold rice and the owner slightly senile! The receptionists were friendly though (according to Dan) and it did OK for a nights kip. We made the most of a slight lie-in in Bajawa and after another sloppy breakfast we headed to Bajawa's bus terminal to catch the bus to Ende. We were told conflicting stories on when the buses left Bajawa and as one person had said 11 we decided to be there at 10:30. As we arrived ... read more

Every backpacker has a ''bus from hell'' story and this one's mine. In relative terms, it probably only ranks around the first or second level, not one of the deeper levels of hell. Anna and I shared a room with Toby last night and we wake at 05h00 to get a bus across Flores. It comes around 06h00. No air-conditioning but at least the windows open so cool morning air comes in. However, when you travel by bus in Indonesia you get to bring everything with you that is necessary for your trip and in this case someone is transporting ten 20-kilo bags of bananas. They're stacked in the centre aisle and on the floor in front of the rear seats. The back seat is best for legroom, so I choose it and stretch my legs ... read more

The 56 seater turbo propelled aircraft bumped down onto the runway at Ende airport. The two hour flight had been amazing. We had never reached an altitude above 17,000 feet so we had been able to see down to the ground the whole time. Hundreds of tiny islands fringed with white sand beaches and as we flew over Flores a multitude of volcanoes, one which was smoking from it's flanks. After collecting our luggage from the completely chaotic system we emerged from the tiny airport to be met by the taxi touts quoting us rediculous prices to get to Moni, a tiny village high in the mountains which was to be our starting point next day the the summit of Kelimutu volcano. We joined up with a young couple from Slovenia, Tomaz and Simona, plus an ... read more

After waiting on the side of the road in Moni for about an hour, a rattling minibus finally came lurching up the hill past us. We flagged it down and glanced inside, finding it even more packed full than the bus we'd taken to Moni. We could wait another couple hours for another bus, and hope it would have more space, or we could ride on top of this one. We climbed on top, settling ourselves and our bags into the luggage rack next to the guy in charge of luggage, who had himself squished into a crevice between bags, his hat pulled over his face to block the sun. As the bus pulled away Jeff and I loaded up on sunscreen, then settled back for the ride. Although undoubtedly not as safe as being inside, ... read more
