We arrived in Sanur with 16 days to kill before our flight to Australia. The challenge was deciding which beach to sit on for all those days??.... it's a tough life travelling! ;-)
As we strolled along the shore looking at the miles of beach we were approached by a number of touts offering us cheap rooms so we checked a few before finding a little gem tucked away down a back alleyway called Little Pond.
The guesthouse had two rows of rooms facing each other with a small pool in between. The rooms were very basic but for 5.50 a night you can't grumble!!
Sanur is a very small resort on the opposite side of Kuta in the south of Bali. The resort is pitched a little more upmarket and away from all the Aussie surf dudes getting drunk on cheap shots and rolling in at 4am. There is one main road that leads through town with nice restaurants on, along with many souvenir shops and flashy hotels that lead down to the beach. The place is popular with honeymooners and couples sit in linen sun loungers while waiters fetch them exotic looking cocktails from the
pool bar.
The catch phrase in Sanur is 'taxi yes'. I guess when there is so many rich tourist's around most of them say yes. We on the other hand felt like holding a big up saying 'NO TAXI THANK YOU' but I imagine it still wouldn't of worked. Mind you there were very few backpackers in town and really this place isn't geared up for them either.
Street food in Indonesia is excellent and Sanur is no exception. We spent many evenings sitting in the market tucking into our yummy Cap Chay (fried veg) and Nasi goreng (fried rice). We also tried a few places along the main road which served up some excellent European veggie burgers and tofu curries.
We could not visit Bali without checking out crazy Kuta, so we hired a Bemo to take us there for a quick day trip. The beach is cool and is full of dudes surfing the waves. Bikini clad girls strut up and down much to the delight of the glaring Indonesia surf board rental chaps. The sand is nice and we chilled (again!) for a few hours before heading for the popular shopping street's called Poppies
1 and 2.
Kuta also has a shrine in memory to all the people who lost their lives to the Bali bombings in 2002. It was very emotional. Relatives had put up individual plaques/pictures of their sons/daughters brothers or sisters that died that day, along with tributes and notes of sorrow and love. It makes you wonder if the people who do these crazy acts of madness killing innocent people think about the consequences of their actions. We paid our respects and headed back to the beach for sunset.
It's a bit of a Bali ritual to see a Kuta sunset and a couple we met in Sanur the previous day had 'done' a Kuta sunset but had been disappointed by lots of clouds, we on the other hand were lucky as it was a clear day. The sunset dipped over the ocean as surfers tried to catch the last wave. Local children came down to the beach and enjoyed a dip under the bright orange sky. We got some amazing pictures but as always they don't really do justice to how beautiful it really was.
The following day Lee had what seemed like a very sore
spot of his face. It got bigger and bigger and his eye turned black like he'd been punched! We had to visit an emergency doctor at 11pm as it got worse through out the day. The doctor could not speak a word of English. After laying on the operating table while expertly been dabbed with a bit of water and prescribed with some cream we were out of there!! It did get better but took 2 weeks and a course of antibiotics to go away. Apparently it was some sort of insect bite!
The rest of our stay in Sanur (16 nights is the longest time we have stayed anywhere!!) was spent reading and chilling and doing absolutely nothing!
Before we go we have to give a mention to the staff at our guesthouse especially Ayu and Ecker who were really nice. They took care of us and made sure our stay was very comfortable - thank you both so much.
Next stop Australia!
