James, Karita, Kim and I headed for the Himalayas for the weekend. It was 10 hours up and 6 hours back. We had a 4 day weekend because it was Diwali. "Diwali (or Deepavali) is a major Hindu holiday, and a significant festival in Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, and Jainism. Many legends are associated with Diwali. Today it is celebrated by Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs across the globe as the "Festival of Lights," where the lights or lamps signify victory of good over the evil within an individual. Diwali is celebrated on the new moon day (approx fifteenth day) of the month Kartika." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diwali "Nainital is a town in the indian state of Uttarakhand and headquarters of Nainital district in the Kumaon foothills of the outer Himalayas. Situated at an altitude of 1,938 metres (6,358 feet) above ... read more

The day after the wedding everyone left quite early and it felt very empty! Susie got to make a speach in a school but you shall have to ask her for details! Anyhow 7 of us got into a car back to Dehli! I had auntie Susie on my lap for the whole way which when we got a wee bit lost my leg wasn't feeling so happy! But such is life! Back in Dehli we slowly said goodbye to the last few guests (ie Emily and Reggie, groom's parents and Maggie their friend!) and we jumped into a cab to our hotel. A new adventure was to begin! We had the next day in Dehli but with our faffing skills (which Ralf can vouch for how good we were at faffing then and still haven't ... read more

Hups, back in Delhi. The past week was absolutely wonderful and just what I needed. 7 days in a very natural environment, living amongst locals, and time to set my mind free from all the worries of Srinagar. Since there are not many distractions around here except for the weather and the stories people tell, I got time to enjoy the wonderful natural area of the Himalayan foothills, and find some peace. The first few days, I was alone with the lady who manages the place temporarily. I enjoyed the solitude actually, after all the stress of organizing everything back in Belgium, and then delayed flights and then the Srinagar story. Everyday here is basically the same, so you forget all about time or the outside world. You learn to "live in the moment" as they ... read more

The Jilling Estate in the Uttaranchal region of the Himalaya Mountains is where Graham and I spent the last few days. It is a beautiful area, contrasted greatly by the chaos and pollution of Delhi. This mountaintop ranch is a haven for backpackers, nature lovers, and those who want to escape into the beautiful scenery. We were the only guests there at the time, and were welcomed in as family. This small village was the most sincere, genuine, loving community I have ever been a part of. They all loved serving and were so genuinely happy, despite living in poverty. We were invited to a Hindu naming ceremony for one of village family's baby. We hiked to a few beautiful peaks. We had tea 5 times a day, had snow ball fights, played with a friend's ... read more

They call it India’s Lake District. And it’s really not an unfair reference because Nainital district of the Kumaon region in Uttaranchal is dotted with beautiful big and small lakes. Nainital city itself is situated around a beautiful lake called Naini jheel. It’s this pretty setting which makes Nainital a hot tourist spot especially for honeymooners who enjoy the view of the lovely lake and also try their hands at boating (There are plenty of them, of all colours and sizes), get themselves snapped to take sweet memories back home. Once you are done with sight seeing how about some shopping at the Mall Road. That specialty of all the hill stations established by the Britishers during their rule in India. Besides Naini jheel there is another lake near Nainital, Khurpatal. An excursion to this lake ... read more
