This summer May 2006 it was really a good trip to Nainital & Corbett National park. We set off by Jet on 11 the May'06 from Chennai (the capital of Tamil nadu state in South India) to Delhi and took the over night train to Kathgodam. This is the last rail head and after this, its only roads and hilly tracks. On reaching at 7 am headed to Nainital in a local taxi, it was a lovely morning with cool breeze and fresh air and greenery all around. As we started on the elevated road it stared raining and we stopped over for a cup of coffee, it was an udipi restaurant (a name typical to certain South Indian restaurants) at Kathgodam. The guy took 15 minutes to come back with coffee for us and we ... read more

Hi again... This blog is specially to remind myself of this exotic forest land and the undisturbed wilderness I experienced back in May 07. Dusty narrow mountain-edge paths, white round pebbles of the Ramganga River, Forests rising beyond sunsets, Mountains touching the sky and a herd of Wild elephants and Spotted deer grazing lazily on this backdrop on the grasslands of Dhikala…is how I remember this nostalgic National Park based in the North of India. The feel is completely unique as compared to the other forest reserves in India , such as the Kanha NP, Tadoba, Bandhavgarh, Pench, Periyaar in the south, Mudhumalai NP etc April-May-June (Summers) are the best months to visit the park. Post October - till almost March, this haven on the outskirts of the Himalayan range of mountains in Uttaranchal goes freezing ... read more

Last weekend was spent with my 2 new Canadian friends at the Corbett Tiger Reserve, prowling for tigers. As my new friend Satomi turns out to be so talented linguistically and because I am so short of time before I disappear for the next 2 weeks on a Nepal mountain trek, I am posting here her version of our weekend…. The 518-square-kilometrel Park, located in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, epitomizes India's success in saving the endangered Royal Bengal Tiger, which sadly still only numbers around 3600 in India, where it is most densely populated in the world. The best way to explore the park is to hire a Jeep; we were lucky to find a driver who was born and raised in the jungle and has the experience of generations in understanding its ... read more

A lot has happened since we left McLeod Ganj.. We got the overnight bus down the mountains which was surprisingly comfy apart from having a toilet stop every thousand years, especially with the bumpiness it was quite a major issue. Jesse was only saved by our bus being stopped by the police. I think the policeman was rather shocked to see a Jesse shaped blur shooting passed him en route to the nearest bush. From Dehli we went got train to Corbett National Park. Which was closed. Due to strike action. However, picket lines were no problem for us. Despite all the Indians and many foreigners being denied entry we were simply taken to the Park Director's house, where he was having tea on the lawn, sitting on old wooden garden furniture. Very old Raj. He ... read more
