Next stop after Pondi was Thanjuvar. Another temple town that looks like every other town in Tamil Nadu. We ended up arriving very later having been told that the bus took 4 hours when it actually took about 6. Luckily the bus dumped us in the middle of town right next to a comfortable guest house that didn't mind opening up and making some beds at half past midnight. Our only reason for coming here was to see a big, old temple. This was really good and woth the effort to see. It is huge and wonderfully carved. No one quite knows how the stone on top of the main tower got there as in wieghs and aufll lot. Some people recon a 6 kilometer ram got it up there. Anyway the thing is very impressive ... read more

Ok, so I’ve now seen a man with a spear through his cheek. Actually, several men to be precise and through both cheeks. Whist in town the other week attempting to visit the internet ‘café’ we got caught up in a religious melee… People took to the streets in devotion to Murghua, the peacock God. Oil burned, spears were brandished and huge peacock-style headresses were sported as crowds paraded through the chaotic streets to a burst of drumming and car horns. I was thinking it was not unlike the Notting Hill Carnival until a guy floated above me dangling from a wicker kite and brandishing flaming torches, and a load of loin-cloth clad devotees strutted past with 2 feet of spear sticking out of either side of their faces. The trip into Thiruvarur didn’t only provide ... read more

The queues outside the house have been getting longer as we’re getting closer to the official start of school. Parents from all the local villages are desperate to get their kids into Shikshayan school thanks to the success Aruna and Raghavan have made of it and the children who attend. The parents don’t seem to understand that no matter how many people they pressgang and how many people they try to pay off and how much money they offer Aruna and Raghavan - if the child’s name’s not on the list they’re not getting in… A&R have one rule – the children they accept are underpriveledged with little chance of education elsewhere. The parents queuing outside the house each day are priveledged enough to be able to bribe their way into other schools. It’s an interesting ... read more

Ok, so the telephone lines have been down for a week now thanks to the widening of the road. It seems in cutting down some trees, they also cut down some phone wires. So after a trip into the local town (40 min on the bus) I found a working cyber cafe. sort of.... One of the things I’m loving here is the use of language. Indian English is very formal. Almost antiquated. “What is your mother tongue” is a common question for example. And expressions such as “What the Dickens”, “It’s beastly hot”, “What a rumpus!” and “He’s a queer fellow” just keep popping up. It somehow all feels a bit Jeeves and Wooster and cuccumber sandwiches on the lawn. One of the things I’m not loving so much is that the food here is ... read more

Aruna’s fight continues. She has been explaing the ‘reservation policy’ to me. Here in India, the cast system is alive and well. It is visible in the way some children won’t play with or hold hands with others and it is visible in the number of unversity palces awarded to students of different backgrounds. Aruna addresses the former in here school simply. Everyone is expected to perform the same rituals as everybody else (normally only a ‘brahmin’ would be allowed to peform the dialy hindy temple rite of ‘puja’) and everyone plays with everyone else. Discrimination within the school is tackled head on by getting the children to reflect on their words and deeds. The government however is dealing with the caste division differently. It has introduced quotas so that universities have to take certain percentages ... read more

So, the elections are over and the result was announced on May 11. The DMK won, with the party riding to victory on the promise of free colour TVs for all. Not even Indian-made TVs… they’ll come from Taiwan. After what seemed like a constant flow of motion and blur and noise I made to Arasavangkadu (yep, you try saying it…) and was met by the lovely Aruna. She allowed me a day to settle in and meet the family before putting me to work. The family is made up of: Amma - her white sari-ed mother and matriarch of the house, whose main aim right now seems to be to feed me. Swarmigee - an orange robed monk or ‘Jesuit priest’ as he was described to me who talks philosophy, has a very sick sense ... read more

Hi All! Once again, thanks for your comments and notes...they are such a joy right now. I cannot even begin to tell you how much. Oh, and I won't be getting any belly button rings soon...sorry! ;) Last night and tonight we are staying in a hotel in the city of Thanjavur. While I love the host family experience, the hotel has been a welcome relief...reliable hot water in and of itself is so wonderful. While I don't have my own room, it is still a welcome night off from being "on" all the time. I did, however, have the requisite "American families are distant and shallow, we have too much divorce and all of that is seeping in and hurting our culture" conversation (aka lecture) at lunch yet again. I must say that topic, along ... read more

We are slowly getting used to Indian traffic and the buses, stoically enduring all noises, smells and bumpy potholes or speed-breakers. We didn’t drive until the Central Bus Stand which is a couple of kms from the centre but were shown out off the bus right in the centre. The hotel we had chosen was full so Klaudia stayed in the lobby while Stephan sought for another place to stay. This took a large part of the afternoon so we could see the magnificent Brihadisvara Temple rather late (notice: the sun sets at 6:30 p.m.). Despite the advanced hour, we were awe-struck. This temple had no kitsch colours to offer, but wonderful buildings in nice red sand-stone in a lush and pleasant surrounding.
