Thoughts: Another fine work by Rohinton Mistry, drawing a portrait of family life and struggles in 'Mumbai', this time with the action centred politically on Shiv Sena and its renaming of Bombay. The tensions between the families is really well done, but the book did not have the same substance as did A Fine Balance by the same author and which I had just finished. It was nowhere near as long and could have done the back story of the Grandfather, which created the intruige, a lot more justice if it were given more pages worth of space.
Nevertheless an easy and enjoyable read in the heat of Rajasthan in April, this book was perfect for hot dusty trains and cool breezy guest-house rooftops. I would recommend iit to anyone wanting to gain a picture of life in modern-day Mumbai. Having just visited I identified with the areas and the atmosphere described and the mind-set of the people.
