Namaste from Nikhil's parent's apartment
Upon our arrival to Pune with Nikhil we were greeted by his dad at the train station and he took us to his and Nikil’s mom apartment. It was so nice not to be in a hotel but a very warm and welcoming home! We first had a delicious Indian tea with milk followed by a delicious traditional south Indian breakfast (idli, sambar, dosai, tomato and coconut chutney).

A well deserved post breakfast nap followed! Before we met up with our friend Deepthi, her husband Mithun and sun Surya, we went with Nikhil to the mall to try…Indian McDonalds (still spicy and mostly vegetarian) and take some cash out of the ATM.

We also had the chance to see our first historical sight – Aga Khan Palace.

Aga Khan Palace was built in the year 1892 by Sultan Mohammad Shah Aga Khan III in Pune. Since then it is one of the biggest landmarks in Indian history. Aga Khan Palace is one of the finest pieces of architectural beauty in western India. The exquisite palace is surrounded by lavish green gardens. Historically, Aga Khan Palace of Pune holds great significance. From 9th August 1942 to 6th May 1944,

this palace was the prison for Mahatama Gandhi, his wife Kasturba and his secretary Mahadev Bhai Desai. Kasturba and Mahadev both passed away during their captivity at the Aga Khan Palace. Gandhi’s ashes are also kept at the palace.

We were picked up by Deepthi for a drive around Pune and we learnt that it is in Pune where one of the India’s most famous ashrams (Osho) is located (also known from the book / movie Eat Pray Love). We drove by the ashram and saw some of the patrons, recognizable by their maroon robes. After a bit of shopping and seeing the main market street we headed back to Nikhil’s parents apartment for dinner. There we were greeted by our next guide to India – Ravi Shankar Chaturvedi!

The dinner was the best meal we so had so far in India, and included delicacies like goat brain curry, which Kostek happily ate as his first ‘new’ culinary experience of the trip. Full of amazing food, we went to sleep quite early in order to wake up early in the AM to get a car ride to Mumbai for our flight to Goa for New Year’s and a
