After our long walk we decided a cold beer would go down pretty well so we wandered down the street to Leopolds cafe. This is a serious travelers hangout with more white people than we have seen since leaving Aus and a strange Chinese, Italian, Continental, Indian menu. About halfway through the first beer Arnee explained the story of Leopolds during the attacks of last month. There are a few visible bullet holes when you look more closely and the security guy lifted a painting up to show some people another. It was quite creepy to be in a busy and seemingly cheery place where such scary things have happened.
After our beers (Fosters no less!) we decided dinner back in our neighborhood would be much nicer and caught our first Indian Taxi (an Indian version of an old Fiat). The taxi driver had no idea where we were going and not much English so after some time driving in circles we started to direct him!
We had dinner at a small cafe (all men) that serves kingfisher strong beer (8%) with excellent curries. As everyone was drinking they didn't stare at Nina too much.
After dinner we found our first
grog shop, a tiny hole in the wall with security gates. You place your order through the grill and they open it just wide enough to hand the bottle out. It was like buying drugs or something illegal.
After that we had to have a sleep in today and are working out what we should do for New Years that does not involve massive crowds (just in case).
