Yesterday, Sunday 24th Feb, cycled 90km. It was a hard day as we climbed 3 big, long hills, it felt as though we were climbing forever. We climbed over 2000m then dropped down 1500m. I felt good and rode well after my recent incapacity.
The scenery around this area is incredible. We have passed several tea plantations en route. At the hotel on Saturday and Sunday evenings a group of local dancers came to entertain us.

Monday.
We are now staying at an incredibly beautiful hotel in Thekkady. The ride today has probably been the best yet, as far as scenery goes. We have passed lakes and mountains and many tea plantations, whose bushes are immaculately pruned every 2 weeks. The whole area has to be seen to be believed. This area is obviously a lot more affluent than some of the areas we have cycled through, there is little evidence of some of the poverty we have witnessed. The children on their way to school are well dressed and carrying their well-stocked school bags. I have seen 2 European couples today, the first so far this trip.

spent a very pleasant time rocking in a hammock. Decided to call it a day though as the midges were beginning to emerge. Haven't seen any mosquitos so far. ( touch wood!!)
Bob, our 80 year old , who incidentally is one heck of a rider and by no means the weakest or slowest, took a very nasty fall today. He picked up a twig in his front wheel which catapulted him over the handlebars. Sadly he landed on his head which was NOT protected by a helmet, if it had been he would have been spared the bad cut to his head and the subsequent concussion. He had to be taken to hospital in Cochin and it is doubtful he will complete the tour.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, we are having a day off from pedalling as we are having a boat trip. On Wednesday we are riding again-about 60 miles and on Thursday we are going on a houseboat. Friday is our last day of cycling when we cover the last 60 miles of the tour and end up at our destination of Cochin. We fly out of Cochin at some time on Saturday.
Best wishes to all. Richard
