Kyle had always wanted to take a houseboat through the backwaters of Kerala, so we left Kochi and drove to Aleppey to find our new home for a day.

We hired a crew and a boat and set out on the water for 24 hours. We ate on the boat, slept on the boat and did not get off the boat until our journey was complete.

We had a crew of 3 that took care of us. The crew included a captain, a chef and another guy who ran the boat. The food was delicious and, as you probably guessed, included fish!

Our houseboat had two bedrooms (that were air conditioned) and two bathrooms, but we spent most of our time in the lounge area of the boat where we could relax, eat and watch the backwaters way of life.

We saw acres and acres of rice paddies, fishermen, modest living in tiny fishing villages, a few churches and a lot of open water.

Our time on the houseboat was incredibly quiet. The waters were very still. And the way of life seemed slow paced and simple.
