Saturday 26th April - 5.30am start. Cab is late. No surprise there, it is India after all. It’s off to Mysore this morning for a weekend of sightseeing and elephant and tiger hunting. Tigers are only seen “if you’re very lucky” and I was feeling lucky! Our first destination, after finding breakfast along the main highway is a small village 50km north of Mysore called Melkote. On the drive to Melkote we are fortunate to finally discover Indian village life - rice and sugar cane plantation fields - beautiful greenery, ox’s hard at work with the farmers and hay drying on the roads. A breath of fresh air. We made our way up to the Yoganarasimha temple which offered stunning views of he surrounding hills and valleys. Leaving our shoes in the cab and walking about ... read more

Just returned fom fabulous trip to state of Karnataka. Traveled to Bangalore via the superb Kingfisher Airline and then a 3 hour drive to Mysore through largly agricultural countryside (bananas, rice, sugar cane) Spent 2 days in Mysore visiting Temples old forts museums etc and learnt a little of the history. The bit I remember most is that the English fought 4 battles for Mysore loosing 2 and winning 2 and interestingly the French were on the side of the Indians(no wonder they lost). The highlights were an evening meal in a Mararajas guest house and the lighting up of the Mysore Palace with some 7500 lights-a sight never to be forgotten. Next day we drove 2 hours to the Bandipure National Park and went on an evening safari the first day and a morning Safari on ... read more

Life is so darn busy. This week was the reminder than I am still a student while I'm here. We have two tests, a presentation, a field trip and 20 or so engineering homework problems all coming up Thursday and Friday. Add in the fact that its our last week in Bangalore and we are trying to see it all between our 6 hours of class a day and you will see that I am a busy guy. I can't really complain though. We did just get back from a four day weekend. We organized our own trip to Bandipur and Ooty. Bandipur is just south of here and is a huge National Park. Ooty is what is called a hill station and is one of the most popular in the south. We left really early ... read more

perhaps, the truest of nature lies at the deepest of the jungles. and this very thought drove us to the bandipur forest; we started from bangalore at the wee hours of morning. after driving 230 kms, (taking a single stop at maddur for breakfast) we reached our destination, bandipur. located at the foothills of mysore-ooty highway, the place is a beauty with lush green and that drove us wild. from badipur we drove another few kilometers to our cottage, 'tiger ranch'. this private cottage is at the heart of deep forest. with about 8 private huts, the cottage provides you with an amazing experience of staying deep inside the forest. the hut we took was furnished with 5 beds, a not so clean toilet and wooden hammocks. the food was gr8. and you'd get enuff drink(very ... read more

I came and stood here a lil far from the lake for quite some time. 'Ominous' is the word, I would like to depict this place & time with. Or that's what I thought for some moments. It's surprising how my mind changes opinions (or rather gives second opinions) about the surroundings once I get an appropriate adobe over the comfortable branch of a huge tree of this Jungle. Nay, this is not written by any ape - coz, obviously you would say that an ape can't write English. All Right! Let me clear out some of the confusion by describing the place and time in a lil more precise way. I will start with time; it is 1538 Hrs, 09-JUL-2005. The place is a National park (forest reserve) called Bandipur National Park (BNP), in Karnataka ... read more
