Must cut the size of these posts down to keep up to date...a long way behind. After the first day in Shimla we found we could walk out of the back of Woodville Palace and continue straight down the road for 20 to 30 minutes to hit The Mall Rd. It was a lovely walk too through the forest (fir trees I think) and monkeys everywhere...could be quite agressive and even the locals gave them a wide berth. Sandra loves all animals and one day threw some fruit out of window for a monkey on the lawn. The next day we came home at 5ish and I was fixing a gin & tonic while Sandra was in the shower the windows were open and the next thing I know there's a big monkey sitting on the ... read more

The Royal Suite was beautiful. ..the furnishings and old photos incredible. A couple of days later we actually met the man who had done all the photographs for the hotel....some off negatives and some off small prints. After breakfast Veeru picked us up and took us downtown where he parked and said right you go up in lift to The Mall Rd and then proceed up to Jakku Temple. We were a bit concerned as we thought we had a guide but as he showed us in the itinerary Shimla was the only city we didn't have a guide. So anyway Sandra and he shared WhatSapp addresses (S was on NZ roaming) and we intrepidly set off on our own. Shimla is built over 7 hills and. It was was a little village in 1815 when ... read more

Here in McLeod Ganj, a pretty corner of Himachal Pradesh’s Dhauladhar mountains, India gave the Dalai Lama refuge after he fled Tibet in 1959. Otherwise known as Upper Dharamsala, it is the tranquil, scenic end of town, set 500m up the mountain from its transport hub and scruffy market town counterpart in the valley. Halfway between the two, Gangchen Kyishong is the home of the Tibetan Government in Exile which undertakes political advocacy and administers to the educational and cultural needs of the roughly 100,000 Tibetans now living in India. When I was approaching Lower Dharamsala, I had found myself wondering what I was actually doing here. I’m lucky enough to have been to Tibet, albeit to a necessarily limited extent; yet by definition I have seen infinitely more of their home country and much more ... read more

Three things I didn’t know about Shimla a week ago. It is the administrative capital of Himachal Pradesh and, although originally “devised for an anticipated peak population of 45,000, at the most 60,000”, its metropolitan area now contains nearly 300,000 people. This is no sleepy remnant of a colonial past but a bustling, busy place. The ridge on which it sits forms a watershed between the Gangetic and Indus river systems. It cleaves the subcontinent in two, one system flowing into the Arabian Sea, and the other into the Bay of Bengal. Despite recent saturation coverage in the British media about the seventieth anniversary of Indian independence, I had managed to miss that it was in Simla, as it was then known, that the key independence negotiations took place. And, appropriately, given the way in which ... read more

We were collected at 630 am complete with a lovely little carry bag of breakfast and lunch items provided by the hotel. The early morning traffic was light and we arrived early at the station....the place was a heaving mass of humanity (basically trains run 24 hour a day) and if we hadnt have had our guide Ashad it would not have been easy to find where to go.While on the platform Ashad gave us all sorts of useful info like how much to pay the red jacketed guys who loaded the bags on etc. We even had the zip on one of our bags fixed...just needed a new handle on the zipper. The train arrived and we got onto our AC executive class car...the step up is built for tall people and plenty of the ... read more

Enriching, revealing, fulfilling, rejuvenating – the list of adjectives can grow rightly long when it comes to describing road trip experiences. While they say, it’s the journey and not alone the destination which matters, how wonderful does it get when on the last day of your trip, you are absolutely sure that you are going to go back for more! Considering my inclination to not spend any long weekend lazing in the cocoon of my house, I consider myself a travel enthusiast with an avid interest in road trips, preferably the ones where in I drive through and through. So this one in Aug’17 was no different – I know it’s the not so friendly rainy season, but did that stop me from venturing out yet again to the hills? Having a fair amount of ... read more

There are things which you lust for from a long time and plan meticulously and then there are those which just happen by chance. My trek to Buran Ghati was due to the latter reason. Ankur, Bhavesh, Rahul and I had booked for KGL trek in July and decided that we ought to do one in May too since our vacations would refresh in July anyway. So we booked Rupin pass initially after seeing the glowing reviews from a number of trekkers. But then all of a sudden a lot more people were interested in joining us and since there were no more slots for the Rupin pass batch, we decided to shift our trek to Buran Ghati which seemed good. My first thoughts were that Indiahikes were just trying to publicize it to lure folks ... read more

Kheerganga is a a must do when in Kasol or Manali , India. Kasol, located in the state of Himachal Pradesh is the hippie paradise with the weed growing freely everywhere. Malana , the magical valley producing the best hash in the world is a half day trek from Kasol. The base point of the trek is from Barshiani which is 20 km from Kasol and one can reach Barshiani via private cabs or via local buses. The highest point of this trek is 13,025 feet. After several failed plans to visit Himachal over the years, I finally got the opportunity in June 2017. Even though I had visited this state 12 years ago, during my undergrad days, I knew I would come back. There is something extraordinarily calming and soothing about this place that helps clear the mind and experience pure bliss. My journey started by taking an hour long flight from Delhi to Amritsar. The close proximity of Amritsar to Dalhousie, my first destination in Himachal, made it the ideal starting point. Since I had planned just a day stay in Amritsar, I decided to Visit the the Golden Temple and the Wagah Border retreat parade. The Golden temple is located at the city centre and is open at all hours. For the Wagah Border retreat parade, it is advisable ... read more
