We purchased our around the world ticket in Hong Kong from Cathay Pacific. We originally tried from American Airlines, but they would have required a seven day waiting period until first departure since we were did not actually have any flights with them. Since we wanted to leave in two days we had to switch airline ticketing. It wasted an afternoon but the customer service agent was at least pleasant. At Cathay Pacific we had a great agent named Debbie, she was quick and efficient.
Our routing is:
Hong Kong → Bangkok → overland to Singapore → Perth → Ayers Rock → Sydney → Christchurch → Auckland → independent flight to Papeete → Easter Island → Santiago → Buenos Aires → Sao Paulo → Lima → Madrid → Cairo → London → Mumbai → overland to Tokyo → Hong Kong

We only confirmed the first flight and left the rest open in order to allow for flexibility. We hope that scheduling will not be a problem.

Ticket cost per person (includes transaction fee charge for foreign currency by BofA)
4 continents plus one addition segment $3,438.19
Taxes and Fees 769.53
Total per person $ 4,207.72

This was a saving of around $1500 per person from purchasing it in the US. It also allowed for us to do the Trans-Mongolian train which a ticket originating in the US would not have, as you can not do land travel between continents. We will have to get our own ticket back to the US from Asia when we are ready to go home. We also elected to buy our own South Africa flights and only purchase four continents instead of five, as the One World ticket did not have great routing for what we wanted. We will either head to South Africa from South America or from Cairo.
