Day 11 Georgia. Tuesday 20th Sep Caves, stealing from monks and spring water in Georgia Back to normality today and a 7am alarm. I forgot to mention yesterday how crazy things were on our holiday day in that we didn’t even set an alarm! Imagine being on holiday and not setting an alarm….crazy right? Today we set off to meet at a metro station where some really good progress had been made on the area outside. Someone waving an orange flag directed us to the office again but there was no free tea or coffee today. After the obligatory group photo we did get given a free bottle of water. Oh and the trip is again booked with Get Your Guide. They whatsapped me last night to ask us to swap our last two trips around ... read more

Today we headed west, a 600km round trip in a minibus with a bit too much aircon for my liking. But Glyn liked it. It was only a small group; a UK guy, a Germany lady, a couple from Russia and one Israeli guy. Our guide, Zuka is a very bubbly bloke from Tbilisi.Zuka told us all about the conflicts in the Causcasus area and how they differ. For example, the people of Russia, Ukraine, Georgia all mix without a problem as the conflict is political. Whereas the Armenians and Azerbaijanis hate each other, you couldn’t mix them on a tour together. When a foreign footballer went to play in Azerbaijan with his team, he wasn’t allowed in the country simply because he had an Armenian surname, he wasn’t even Armenian!Naturally Zuka talks about wine, you ... read more

After driving back from Mt Aragats area to Yerevan, we spent an afternoon wandering around, including visiting the Noy brandy and wine factory (good tour and we could just walk in and had the guide to ourselves). From there we took a minibus (7000 AMD) to Didube bus station in Tblisi (this time the border crossing took 10 mins - it had taken 90 when we came through to Armenia), spent the afternoon wandering around there, including walking up to the Mother of Georgia monument with good views over the city. It has been very hot in Yerevan and Tblisi - hitting 39 degrees - nearly as hot as Doha. Despite being told it was a 4 hour journey from Tblisi to Akhaltsikhe we happily arrived after 2.5 hours, we were cramped in the back of ... read more

Day 135 Wednesday 1st June 2016 – Mestia to Gori It was another beautiful day and we are a little sad to leave as this is truly a beautiful corner of the world and the lady at the Guest House has really looked after us feeding us fresh yoghurt and full cream milk (I had forgotten what it tastes like after having low fat for years), hot Khachapuri (cheesy bread), millet, omelettes, hot bread and jams. She was upset the first morning when we did not eat it all and we had to explain there is only the two of us and although great it was enough for 5. This morning she packed up the left overs for our lunch and handled them to us as we left. Driving back down the mountain with ... read more
