January 10th 2007Winter time is probably not the best time to visit Yunan province even though it was nice that there were probably fewer tourists. I got sick during my stay here so I probably wasn't able to enjoy the trip as much as I'd like. Nonetheless, it was a culturally enriching trip. Well worth a visit.

Yunnan is famous for Pu-erh tea. As with enjoying other fine culinary delights, there is a real art to appreciating it. Would you pay $100usd for a disk? As with some old world wines, prices seem to increase with the age of the premium leaves.

This is just one of the many shows that restauarants put on to draw in the customers. It does make for a festive mood even if it is a bit loud.

One of the things that make Lijiang mood is that many of the locals especially older women still wear their national custumes. And unlike many other touristy towns, they dont just wear them for tourists.

Because of the time of year that I visited, the most popular food seem to be soup noodle and their famous hot pot featuring black lamb. As with most places I visit, what i enjoyed most is the food offered by street vendors such as the array of food you see here. In the center of the picture is a stack of doughy pastry call baba. They are fried, fairly doughy pasty. They come either sweet or slightly salty. I didnt care much for them because they are quite hard and dense. A bit on the stale side since most are made in advance and just left to sit. According to the locals, they can keep for several days. Trust me, most taste like it too.

Just an example of the rich assortment of meats and vegetables to choose from. They are all nicely skewered to make it easier for us to cook and eat with. Can you imagine the labor involved? 1 yuan a skewer. BTW, sorry for the blurry picture. I didn't think shining an obnoxious flash into these people's eyes would make me many friends.
